Neato Confirms That Cloud Services Are Ending for Robot Vacuums

Summary: Neato Robotics has confirmed that its cloud infrastructure will soon shut down, ending app-based control for all Neato robot vacuums. The change affects mapping, scheduling, and smart home features, though basic manual cleaning will still be available.

Neato Robotics has officially confirmed that its cloud infrastructure will be phased out, marking the end of app-based functionality for all Neato robot vacuums. The company, which was under the Vorwerk Group, stated that it can no longer maintain its legacy cloud systems under modern cybersecurity and compliance standards.

Update: Community Petition

In response to Neato’s cloud service shutdown, a community-created petition has been launched requesting that Vorwerk, Neato’s parent company, consider options for continued device support. The petition calls for either limited continuation of cloud services or the release of the cloud API to allow third-party and community-driven support.

The petition can be viewed here: https://www.openpetition.org/!wknmd

Although Neato ceased operations in 2023, Vorwerk continued hosting the cloud to honor a five-year service commitment. However, the company now says maintaining this infrastructure “would not be technically meaningful” or sustainable given evolving data-protection laws and platform requirements.

Why Is Neato Shutting Down the Cloud?

According to the official statement, the decision was driven by security, regulatory, and technical limitations.

“Since 2023, cybersecurity standards, compliance obligations, and regulatory frameworks have advanced significantly… Updating this environment would not ensure the level of quality and sustainability our customers can expect.” – Neato

In short, the company says the shutdown is necessary to protect user privacy and data in a changing regulatory landscape.

What Features Will Stop Working

The shutdown will primarily affect any features that rely on cloud connectivity, including:

  • The Neato app (MyNeato) for mobile control
  • Remote start and scheduling
  • Smart home integrations (Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, etc.)
  • Mapping storage and no-go zones
  • Over-the-air software updates

Without the cloud, users will no longer be able to control cleanings from their phones.

What Will Still Work on Neato Robots?

Neato assures users that their vacuums will continue to function manually by pressing the start button on the robot itself for a total cleaning run. This means Neato owners can keep using their devices, but only in manual mode, without app connectivity or remote features.

Additionally, Neato says that manufacturer warranties remain valid, and online support and troubleshooting resources remain available at neatorobotics.com.

When Will the Neato Cloud Shut Down Completely?

At this time, Neato has not provided a specific shutdown date or a detailed phase-out schedule. The company’s statement says cloud services are being “phased out,” suggesting that features may disappear gradually over the coming months rather than all at once.

How the Shutdown Affects Neato Owners

For many users, this change means losing the “smart” capabilities that made their vacuums appealing in the first place. Without cloud connectivity, Neato vacuums become “dumb” vacuums with limited manual control.

If you relied heavily on mapping, app scheduling, or no-go zones, you’ll notice a significant drop in functionality. However, if you typically pressed “Start” on the robot itself, your daily cleaning routine will be mostly unchanged.

Can You Still Use the Neato App?

Once the shutdown is complete, the MyNeato app will no longer connect to servers, meaning it won’t display cleaning history, maps, or scheduling options. Some models may still pair locally with Wi-Fi, but many core features depend on cloud authentication, which will cease to function.

What About Data, Privacy, and Security?

Vorwerk states that the shutdown is a privacy-driven decision, ensuring outdated systems don’t pose a cybersecurity risk. The company also implies that user data will not continue to be stored or processed once the cloud is offline. This aligns with European and international privacy regulations such as GDPR.
