Best Spot Cleaners of 2025 – Vacuum Wars Testing Results
We purchased nearly every top-selling portable carpet cleaner on the market and ran them through a series of all-new tests, including a completely redesigned stain removal test using a colorimeter. From entry-level budget picks to feature-packed cordless models, we wanted to find out which machine truly deserves the title of best spot cleaner.
In this guide, we’ll cover how each portable carpet cleaner works, the specific tests we performed, and reveal why we chose our top three overall as well as our picks for the best cordless carpet cleaner and the best budget spot cleaner.
How Portable Carpet Cleaners (Spot Cleaners) Work
All of the spot cleaners in our lineup work in a similar way. You fill the clean water tank with water and the included cleaning solution, spray the mixture onto the stain using a trigger on the handle, and let it sit for a minute to work. You then scrub the stain while the machine suctions up the dirty water into a separate tank.
After cleaning, the dirty water tank should be emptied and, ideally, the hose should be flushed using the self-cleaning feature—if the model has one—before storage.
Spot Cleaner Tests & Performance Scoring
We scored each model using weighted factors across a range of categories.
Suction Power was measured in two places on each machine, often with both a digital and analog manometer. The Rug Doctor posted the highest suction, followed by the Kenmore KW2001.
The Bissell Little Green Cordless had the lowest, well below the average of 51 inches of water lift—but cordless did not always mean weaker. The Kenmore and Hoover cordless models both landed in the top 10 for suction.
Hose length varied significantly, ranging from about 6.4 feet on the Kenmore Spotlite Go cordless to under 4 feet on the Dreame N10, along with differences in hose management and storage design.
We also evaluated swivel handle availability, which helps prevent hose twisting during scrubbing, as well as hose quality based on its resistance to kinking during use. The Uwant and Bissell Little Green both had highly kink-resistant hoses.
Cord Length and Management were also evaluated. The Amoroa models had the longest cord at just over 20 feet, while the Ailltopd had the shortest at under 9 feet. A well-designed cord management system, like on the Dirt Devil, makes it easier to store the machine neatly and prevent tangling.
Water Tank Capacity and Features factored in as well. Some models use internal heaters to keep water warm. A few, such as the Bissell Hydrosteam and Starrybot, produce steam for stain removal and sanitation—though in our stain removal testing, this didn’t make much difference.
Why Hose Cleaning Matters for Portable Carpet Cleaners
Because these machines deal with messy, bacteria-laden spills, it’s not enough to just rinse the dirty water tank. The hose needs cleaning, too. If not cleaned, residue can remain inside for months, as our neglected example showed.
Some models allow you to suck up clean water through the hose, while others include caps that connect the hose to the clean water tank for rinsing. A few have built-in docking ports for the hose, like the Shark Stain Strikers, or handle-mounted buttons that divert water back into the hose for cleaning. Models with these solutions scored higher in this category.
Attachments and Tools for Stain Removal
Most spot cleaners come with a standard small brush for scrubbing, which is often all you need. Some add wider brushes, tank-equipped tools for handling liquids like pet urine, or interchangeable bristle and rubber tip options. Rubber tips are easier to clean and more sanitary for certain messes.
Our New Stain Reduction Test for Spot Cleaners
For our updated stain test, we applied a measured amount of grape juice and synthetic urine (urea-based) to white carpet, allowing the stains to fully dry. Each cleaner was used exactly as the manufacturer recommends, including their own solution in the specified mix.
We then measured the perceptual lightness of the stains before and after cleaning using a colorimeter, waiting until the carpet was dry for accurate readings.
The test method was consistent: spray for 10 seconds, wait five minutes, then scrub vigorously for one minute.
Urine stains were removed so completely across the board that we excluded them from scoring—though future versions of the test may make the synthetic more challenging.
In our 2025 competition, top performers in stain reduction included the Bissell Little Green Pro, Bissell Little Green Max, Ailltopd, Shark Stain Striker, and Shark StainStriker HairPro. The Bissells’ strong suction may have helped, while the Sharks’ use of a separate concentrated oxy solution tank could also be a factor.
Considering Long-Term Use & Customer Reviews
Since we don’t live with each machine for extended periods, we also factored in Amazon review scores and the percentage of one-star reviews as an indicator of potential long-term issues. It’s not a perfect measure, but it adds useful perspective to our testing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best portable carpet cleaner for pet stains?
From our 2025 testing, the Shark Stain Striker Hair Pro stood out for pet stains thanks to its strong suction, excellent stain reduction score, and attachments designed for tough messes. The Bissell Little Green Pro is also a solid choice, especially for homes with pets that have frequent accidents.
Is a cordless portable carpet cleaner worth it?
Cordless models are more convenient for spot cleaning in hard-to-reach areas, cars, and stairs. Our top cordless pick, the Bissell Little Green Mini Cordless, offered competitive stain removal performance while eliminating the hassle of managing a cord during cleanup.
How do you clean a portable carpet cleaner hose?
After use, empty and rinse the dirty water tank, then flush the hose with clean water to remove residue and bacteria. Many newer models have built-in hose cleaning features, such as a docking port or a handle button that redirects water through the hose for a thorough rinse.
Why Trust Vacuum Wars Carpet Spot Cleaner Reviews?

Top Spot Cleaner for Carpet Stains (Tested on Pet Urine!)
We bought 15 of the most popular carpet spot cleaning machines and put them through all kinds of tests, focusing on their performance, features, and suitability for tackling pet urine stains and tough messes. In this article we’ll compare all the results as well as their specs and features and share our three top picks.
Spot Cleaner Basics
Before we begin, let’s briefly go over how these spot cleaners work. They all operate on a similar principle – you fill their clean water tanks with warm water and the provided cleaning solution. A trigger on the handle sprays the stain with the water solution mix. Next, you’ll scrub the area with the brush. The machine then sucks up the dirty water into its dirty water tank, removing pet waste left behind—and hopefully doing so very effectively.
A Note on Effective Pet Stain Removal
Before we go any further, we can’t not mention the importance of pre-treating pet stains before you use any spot cleaner on them, regardless of whether it’s the top-rated or lowest- rated product.
While most commercial pre-treatment sprays fail to effectively remove these stains, we discovered that hydrogen peroxide (especially in higher concentrations like 6% or 12%) showed impressive results when used as a pre-treatment. We recommend gently agitating it with a brush and letting it sit for about 15 minutes before using your spot cleaner. And then…you need to do it again! That’s right, pre-treating should always be done twice to ensure the job is done right.
Always exercise caution and test a small, inconspicuous area of your carpet before applying hydrogen peroxide so you don’t risk bleach stains on your carpet.
It’s also helpful to remember that pre-treating with a hydrogen peroxide solution does not rid the carpet of the smell that the pet waste leaves behind. Instead, you’ll want to use chlorine dioxide tablets. We recommend CarpetMuscleTV’s video for more information about how to use these tablets.
Key Factors We Considered in Rating a Spot Cleaner for Carpet
We evaluated these spot cleaners based on various criteria to create an overall score.
Some of the factors we took into account include:
- Suction Power: We measured suction power both at the hose and base. For this, the top performers were the Rug Doctor, Kenmore, and Bissell Little Green Pro.
- Hose Quality and Length: A high-quality, kink-proof hose and a swiveling handle were factors we considered for maneuverability.
- Cord Length: We considered cord length, with the average being 16 feet and 20 feet being the highest.
- Tank Capacity: We measured tank capacity based on clean water, as a larger tank means less frequent refills.
- Noise Level: Noise levels were noted to ensure a comfortable cleaning experience.
- Weight: The overall weight of the spot cleaner affects ease of use.
- Attachments and Features: Extra points were given for additional attachments and innovative features, like steam cleaning and internal water heating.
- Price and Online Reviews: Of course, we considered list prices and online reviews, factoring in any consistent quality control issues.

Vacuum Wars Top Three Picks
After thorough testing, our top three spot cleaner picks for 2023 are:
The Kenmore SpotLite, the top pick in our latest spot cleaners competition, features robust suction capabilities and a versatile design that enhances its performance on carpet stains, particularly those from organic sources like pet urine. It delivers effective cleaning with a user-friendly, ergonomic tank that simplifies maintenance. This cleaner not only provides efficient stain removal but also speeds up drying times due to its powerful suction.
- Powerful suction
- Ergonomic tank design
- Effective on stains
- Newer on market
Check out our honest review of the Hoover ONEPWR Emerge Pet+ Review next.
It’s worth noting, however, that both the Kenmore and the Shark are newcomers to the market and have not accumulated as many reviews as the well-established Bissell. This means it’s challenging to guarantee their long-term durability and potential quality control issues.
If you prioritize a product with a solid track record of positive reviews and want a machine that’s similar to our previous competition winner, we recommend considering the second-place overall winner, the Bissell Little Green Pro.
However, whatever you choose from these three best portable carpet cleaners, we think you’ll be quite pleased with the results!
And remember, stay up to date with everything you need to know on the Vacuum Wars blog when it comes to vacuums, carpet cleaners, and choosing the best products based on rigorous hands-on testing.
