Dreame Matrix10 Ultra Review: The Basics

The Matrix10 Ultra robot vacuum and mop combo is a premium model with much of the same hardware and software as other high-end Dreame robots, with one major exception: its innovative multi-mop switching dock.

An inside look at the Dreame Matrix multi-mop switching dock.
An inside look at the Dreame Matrix multi mop switching dock ยฉ Vacuum Wars

It has the usual high-end features you’d expect from a premium model, such as:

  • Emptying its internal dust bin into a disposable bag in the base
  • Washing the mop pads with hot water
  • Drying the mop pads
  • Refilling the water tanks

It’s also the only one that uses a kind of internal conveyor system to automatically switch between up to three different styles of mop pads and that can swap up to three types of cleaning fluids. That makes it one of the first premium robot vacuums we know of that can truly tailor its mopping to different rooms and floor types.

Dreame Matrix10 Mop Pads

Each Matrix10 Ultra mop pad has a slightly different texture and use case. For example, thereโ€™s a softer, more absorbent pad for bathrooms, a harder nylon-bristle pad for surfaces that might need a bit more scrubbing, and a more standardized mop pad for general hard floor cleaning.

Each Matrix10 Ultra mop pad has a slightly different texture and purpose a softer more absorbent pad for bathrooms a firmer nylon bristle pad for tougher scrubbing and a standard pad for general hard floor cleaning ยฉ Vacuum Wars

Dreame Matrix10 Mopping Solution Compartments

In addition, it has three separate compartments for different mopping solutions. Dreame says one solution is optimized for wood floors, another for general hard floor cleaning, and another is formulated for pet odors. These are important differences for buyers looking for the best robot vacuum for hardwood floors or a pet-friendly robot vacuum.

A Closer Look at the Multi-Mop Switching Dock

The mop-switching action performed reliably in practice, across multiple runs in two different floor plans. However, there was one instance in which the app reported a mop-switching error. When we checked, nothing seemed wrong, and it worked fine after restarting.

So, itโ€™s still too early to know whether other users will see issues here. Especially with a product this premium, where early feedback comes in slowly. Our suspicion is that with all the new moving parts, it could be more prone to little quirks like this. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the ratings as they come in, as those numbers do affect our overall rankings over time.

Dreame Matrix10 Ultra Review: Pros and Key Differences from the L50 Ultra

For the rest of this Dreame Matrix10 Ultra review, we’ll compare it with the L50 Ultra. It’s a cheaper product that has almost all the same features as the Matrix10, except for the multi-mop switching dock. If you donโ€™t need that automatic mop pad switching system, the L50 Ultra is a good alternative and we recently named it our best robot vacuum under $1000 pick.

Vacuum Performance and Suction Evaluations

As for basic hardware and performance on the robot itself, the Dreame Matrix10 had an official suction rating of 30,000 Pascals, compared to about 20,000 on the L50.

Suction test results, showing Dreame Matrix10 Ultra, Dreame L50 Ultra, and the test average. Measured suction of 1.11 kPa for the Matrix10 Ultra, 0.47 kPa for the L50 Ultra, and a 0.97 kPa average.

Anti-Tangle Design

They both use the same dual roller brush systemโ€”Dreameโ€™s new anti-tangle roller brush design. It channels hair to the side to resist hair tangles. And both robot vacuums proved very effective in our evaluations, picking up deeply embedded debris and resisting hair tangles.

Carpet Deep Clean Evaluation

In our carpet deep cleaning assessment, where we embed sand into medium-pile carpet and weigh their bins before and after a timed run, the Matrix10 scored 80%. That’s above average but not quite as high as the L50โ€™s 90%. For reference, the average score on this evaluation is 77%.

The Matrix10 scored 80 while the L50 reached 90 against a 77 average in the carpet deep clean evaluation ยฉ Vacuum Wars

We suspect this result may be related to a height or seal issue, as the difference also appeared in the crevice pickup evaluation. The Matrix10 picked up nothing (0) while the L50 scored 1.5, compared to the average of 2.

Mopping Features and Real-World Results

The Dreame Matrix10 Ultra mop performance really shines. It uses two spinning mop pads that are electronically fed with water and solution, and one pad can extend for better edge coverage.

Its pads lift automatically whenever the robot detects carpets to prevent them from getting wetโ€”an essential feature if you want a robot vacuum that avoids your carpets while mopping.

The Matrix10 also has Dreameโ€™s more advanced option to magnetically drop mop pads off at the base. That provides even more protection for carpets when vacuuming.

The Matrix10 Ultra includes Dreames advanced magnetic mop pad drop off feature allowing the robot to leave its pads at the base for added carpet protection while vacuuming ยฉ Vacuum Wars

Most of these mopping features are found on the Dreame L50, but there was a noticeable difference in the actual mopping performance results between the two. In our stain removal evaluation, the Matrix10 scored an impressive 136 points, significantly better than the L50โ€™s 90 points and above the average score of 112 points.

Dried on stain scores show the Matrix10 leading the L50 by 46 points and finishing above the 112 point average ยฉ Vacuum Wars

The Matrix10 Ultra uses about twice as much water as the L50 on average, but still not too much. Just under the average amountโ€”enough to lift the stains effectively while avoiding puddling or streaking. The Matrix10 left 0.95 g behind compared to the L50โ€™s 0.35 g in our water-left-behind measurements. Both are better than the average of 1.04 g.

In our new dried-on stain mopping evaluation, which we think is more challenging than the original, the Matrix10 did exceptionally well, too. Interestingly, it did much better than the Dreame Aqua10 Roller, which uses a roller-style mop. Matrix10 scored 147 points compared to the Aqua10โ€™s 68 points.

There seems to be an assumption that roller mops are always superior to dual-spinning mop pads, but that isnโ€™t always the case, at least according to the early versions of this evaluation.

Overall, the Dreame Matrix10 earned a very high, above-average combined mopping score of 29 points. That’s just slightly below the L50โ€™s 30 points and notably above the average of 22 points. It’s really the main reason you would want to buy the Matrix10 โ€” because you want one of the best mopping robot vacuums and mop pad management systems available.

Obstacle Avoidance and Smart Navigation Features

Another major pro of the Dreame Matrix10 is its obstacle avoidance system. It uses a combination of an RGB camera, 3D structured light sensors, and an LED light for dark areas to recognize and avoid objects. It performed essentially the same as the L50 in our obstacle avoidance evaluations.

And in our real-world evaluations, it was generally very good as well. It scored 19 out of 24 possible points, just slightly behind the L50โ€™s 20 out of 24 and above the average score of 17. Not perfect, but definitely better than average at spotting things it might have otherwise gotten stuck on. These performance numbers matter if you want a robot vacuum with good obstacle avoidance.

Threshold Climbing and Pro-Leap Technology

This one is something that Dreame has been doing really well compared to its competitors. The Dreame Matrix10 Ultra has threshold crossing thanks to its Pro-Leap technology. When you use the app to mark a threshold on the map, the robot vacuum will raise its chassis to climb over it. It makes a big difference because in some floor plans, robots used to get stuck in one part of the house and could never reach certain rooms.

Threshold trials like this help show real world climbing limits ยฉ Vacuum Wars

Dreame currently has the highest stated threshold numbers in the industry. On paper, the Matrix10 can climb a two-tiered 80mm threshold compared to 60mm on the L50. But in our evaluations, the more important metric was single-tier threshold performance, where the L50 was able to climb 42mm, which was slightly better than the Matrix10 climbing height of 40mm.

Cons of the Dreame Matrix10 Ultra

The Matrix10 Ultra is a terrific robot vacuum, but not all the news is good. And our Dreame Matrix10 Ultra review wouldnโ€™t be complete without discussing the potential drawbacks, so letโ€™s get into the cons.

Navigation and Battery Life Issues

Almost all of our concerns with the Dreame Matrix10 Ultra center on its navigation and battery life. Both the Matrix10 and the L50 use a top-mounted spinning LiDAR navigation system for mapping and navigation. This LiDAR unit retracts into the robot if it can fit under certain furniture, then raises back up in normal cleaning mode for better mapping.

Between cleaning passes the Matrix10 parks in the station so the base can handle charging and maintenance ยฉ Vacuum Wars

The Matrix10 was consistently below average in our navigation efficiency evaluations. It cleans at a rate of 0.62 mยฒ per minute compared to the L50โ€™s faster 0.80 mยฒ per minute and the average rate of 0.72 mยฒ per minute.

The Matrix10 trades a bit of speed for its high end capabilities ยฉ Vacuum Wars

We also noticed it occasionally got stuck in places that didnโ€™t make much sense in various real-world runs. There were a couple of occasions where we had to physically move it back to the base. To be fair, it completed most of its runs without issues. But there were enough hiccups here to make us feel that its navigation isnโ€™t quite as solid as the L50โ€™s, which aligns with what we saw in the navigation efficiency data.

Both models were below average for robot vacuum battery life and square feet per charge. The Matrix10 covered an estimated 757 square feet per charge, the L50 covered 823 square feet, and the average robot covered around 1117 square feet.

Chart for estimated coverage per charge, comparing Dreame Matrix10 Ultra (757 ftยฒ), Dreame L50 Ultra (823 ftยฒ), and the average robot (1117 ftยฒ).
The L50 covered slightly more ground per charge than the Matrix10 though each fell short of the group average ยฉ Vacuum Wars

This result hurt their overall scores and may matter if you’re looking for robot vacuums with long battery life.

Potential Long-Term Concerns With the Mop Switching System

This one really isnโ€™t a con. Itโ€™s just something we canโ€™t fully pin down yet. We just feel that the mop switching system could be prone to errors due to all the additional moving parts. But based strictly on our evaluations, the multi-mop switching dock worked fine. And there really is nothing like the Dreame Matrix10 Ultra robot vacuum on the market if being able to finely tune your mopping routines for various floor types is important to you.

Dreame Matrix10 Ultra Review: Should You Buy It?

If you donโ€™t mind the price, it’s worth buying because its mopping system is truly top tier, both in terms of features and real-world performance. If you care most about mopping and automation, the Matrix10 is the one.

In terms of basic vacuuming performance and navigation, the cheaper Dreame L50 Ultra does pretty much everything the Matrix10 does, except for the mop switching dock. And the L50 actually does many of those things slightly better. So, it comes down to what matters most in your situation.
