DJI Enters the Robot Vacuum Market with the Romo Series

Just a week after unveiling its first 360-degree action camera, drone maker DJI has revealed its first robot vacuums. The DJI Romo series launches with three models โ€” Romo S, Romo A, and Romo P โ€” each featuring DJIโ€™s advanced obstacle avoidance technology adapted from its drones.

Initial Launch in China, Global Release Expected Later in 2025

The vacuums are initially launching in China, priced at CNY 4,699 (~$654 USD) for the Romo S and A, and CNY 6,799 (~$947 USD) for the Romo P. DJI expects a broader global rollout later in 2025, though U.S. availability remains uncertain. The company is currently navigating potential import restrictions tied to the proposed US Countering CCP Drones Act, which could block certain DJI products unless they receive security clearance.

Drone Tech Meets Floor Care

DJI has leveraged its โ€œomnidirectional obstacle sensingโ€ system โ€” a staple in its aerial drones โ€” to help the Romo vacuums navigate homes with precision. The combination of a binocular fisheye vision sensor, three wide-angle laser sensors, and a machine learning perception algorithm allows the Romo to detect and avoid objects as small as 2mm.

The vacuums adjust their cleaning strategy based on what they detect โ€” working around cords or furniture, while steering clear of socks or pet accidents. They can also slow down when approaching lightweight debris, like spilled pet food, to avoid scattering particles while increasing suction to collect them efficiently.

Performance and Cleaning Features

  • Docking Station: Empties, cleans, refills, and fully charges the vacuum in about 2.5 hours.
  • Suction Power: Up to 25,000Pa, the highest official number Vacuum Wars has tracked to date.
  • Brush System: Anti-tangle double roller brush and two extendable side brushes for edge and corner cleaning.
  • Mopping System: Dual spinning mop pads that lift when crossing carpets; the Romo P includes an additional compartment for specialized cleaning solutions, such as antibacterial or degreasing agents for targeted rooms.

Design Variants

  • Romo P: Fully transparent vacuum and docking station.
  • Romo A: Transparent panel on top of the vacuum.
  • Romo S: Opaque white housing.

Smart Navigation and Extras

Using path-planning algorithms developed for drones, the Romo series creates and stores efficient cleaning routes locally for privacy. All models support voice control and can be used as mobile home monitoring cameras, allowing real-time viewing and two-way communication through the onboard cameras.

To reduce disruption, the vacuums incorporate noise-reduction technology, and the onboard intelligence can identify particularly dirty areas and spend extra time cleaning them.
