Dreame L50 Ultra Robot Vacuum Review: Premium Features, Powerful Performance

The L50 Ultra robot vacuum is the current flagship from Dreame. We bought one and evaluated it in various ways over the past several weeksโ€”and it quickly rose to the number one spot on the Vacuum Wars Top 20 Robot Vacuums list, where it currently holds a strong lead. In our Dreame L50 Ultra review, we’ll go over the pros and cons and explain why it became our top-rated robot vacuum of any price, at least for now.

The Dreame L50 Ultra is a robot vacuum/mop combo featuring a ProLeapโ„ข system with retractable legs that enable it to climb over obstacles up to 2.36โ€ฏin (6โ€ฏcm) and vertical steps up to 1.65โ€ฏin (4.2โ€ฏcm), supported by a shockโ€‘absorbing design rated for 30,000 cleaning cycles. It delivers up to 19,500โ€ฏPa of Vormaxโ„ข suction and uses a HyperStreamโ„ข Detangling DuoBrush to remove debris and long hair (up to 11.8โ€ฏin) with reduced tangling and noise. With Dualโ€ฏFlex Arm Technology, extendable side brush, and mop reach, it can clean into tight corners and under low furniture; TripleUp Tech allows it to lift mop pads (0.413โ€ฏin) during vacuuming for multi-surface coverage. Its dock uses the AceCleanโ„ข DryBoard system: 167โ€ฏยฐF hotโ€‘water cleaning of mop pads across four temperature settings, followed by hotโ€‘air drying, and autoโ€‘empties dust into a 3.2โ€ฏL bag that lasts up to 100 days. Additional features include AI-driven obstacle avoidance using RGB and 3D structured light, LED path illumination, app control via Dreamehome, and automated water refill with sensor-based rewashing and remopping. The Dreame L50 Ultra Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Dreame’s L50 Ultra is a robot vacuum and mop combo with a comprehensive docking station that empties the bin and maintains the mop. It’s available in either black or white, and shouldn’t be confused with the older X50 Ultra robot vacuum. The L50 Ultra is newer and has more features.

Evaluation and Performance

Numbers and specs only tell part of the story, so we rely on hands-on evaluations to measure real-world performance. The Dreame L50 Ultra was no exception, and it delivered strong results across the board.

Vacuuming Performance: Dual Brush Roll Robot Vacuum

The L50 Ultra was great at its primary job of vacuuming. It uses Dreame’s new dual brush roll, combined with a single side brush, to sweep hard floors and carpets. It was remarkably efficient at picking up debris from both surfaces in a nice, clean manner with minimal scattering or other issues.

Practical Cleaning Results in Our Testing

It performed especially well in our practical evaluations. In our carpet deep clean evaluation (measures how much sand it can pull from medium-pile carpets), it scored 90%, which is a top-five score of all time. That’s out of over 150 robots we’ve evaluated, where the average is about 77%.

Pet Hair Cleaning: A Robot Vacuum for Pet Hair

The Dreame L50 Ultra robot vacuum did amazingly well with our 2 ยฝ-inch flattened pet hair pickup evaluation on carpets, which is a challenge for some robots. It achieved a rare perfect score, collecting 100% of the hair! The average is just 81%.

Corner Reach with the Extending Side Brush

It also features an automatically extending side brush, which extends whenever the robot vacuum senses corners.

You can turn this feature on or off in the app, and it was really helpful with corner coverage in our evaluations.

Robot Vacuum and Mop Pad System

Another big pro is its fully featured mopping system. It uses two spinning mop pads that can automatically lift to 10.5 millimeters to scrub floors. So when the robot senses carpets, it lifts to avoid getting them wet. That means you can vacuum and mop houses with a mixture of hard floors and carpets in the same run instead of two separate runs.

The L50 Ultra’s pads are also magnetic, so they can be left at the base when vacuuming carpets to be extra sure they don’t get wet.

This is a rare and nice feature. Plus, one of its mop pads automatically extends for better edge coverageโ€”another nice premium feature.

Mopping Performance vs. Stains and Water Left Behind

As for mopping performance, the L50 Ultra performed well in our evaluations of dried-on stains and water left behind. It had an overall mopping performance score of 211 points, which is higher than the average score of 188.

Overall mopping score comparison: Dreame L50 Ultra scored 211 points vs average of 188 points.

It used a lot less water than average to clean up stains, too. After using it in our home for just a brief period, we didn’t notice any streaks, which is a good sign. We especially like its ability to mop along the grain of hard floors. It’s a great feature that you can enable in the app.

Water left behind comparison: Dreame L50 Ultra left 0.35g vs average of 1.01g in mopping tests.

Self-Emptying Dock and Mop Maintenance System

We can’t discuss mopping features without mentioning its multi-functional dock, which is another advantage.

When the robot returns to its base, it automatically empties the contents of its rather large 400ml dust bin into the disposable bag in the base. It’s an unusually large 3.22L bag that Dreame says can hold up to 100 days of debris before needing to be replaced.

The base also washes its mop pads with hot water using its new AceClean DryBoard system. It uses 20 spray nozzles and a new flat design to minimize dirt buildup compared to previous systems.

It also dries its mop pads with hot air, which is excellent for sanitation. And refills the mop tank with either water or a water solution mix that uses a separate mop solution reservoir.

The Dreame L50 Ultra features an internal color sensor that analyzes the water after mopping. If the water is too dirty, it will either initiate more mopping washes or re-mop the floor, or both, depending on user settings.

Threshold Crossing with the Pro Leap System

Another significant advantage was its Pro Leap system, a mechanism introduced by Dreame with the X50. It allows the robot vacuum to leap over large thresholds and some chair legs. They say it can cross single 42mm (1.65-inch) thresholds straight up, and do two-tiered thresholds up to 2.65 inches. That’s tied for the highest we’ve ever evaluated.

The L50 Ultra did really well with the various threshold evaluations we did in the studio. It was also the first robot vacuum to ever navigate into a sunroom add-on during evaluation, which has a 1.5-inch (38mm) threshold.

Overall, the Pro Leap system proved to be a genuinely useful feature.

LiDAR Navigation and Mapping Efficiency

This robot vacuum uses a top-mounted LiDAR for mapping and navigation. It mapped both the studio floor plan and our home really quickly and did a flawless run right off the bat. In the various navigation evaluations we conducted, it achieved a higher-than-average navigation efficiency score, and in general, we consider it to be very intelligent.

Navigation efficiency chart: Dreame L50 Ultra achieved 0.80 mยฒ per minute vs average 0.70 mยฒ per minute.

Obstacle Avoidance Performance

Part of why the L50 Ultra is so good at navigation and mapping is its obstacle avoidance system. The robot vacuum uses a combination of front-mounted lasers, an RGB camera, and an LED light.

In our various obstacle avoidance evaluations, it scored 20 out of a possible 24 points, which is significantly higher than the average of 16.6. Not perfect, but certainly better than average.

App and Smart Controls for Dreame Robot Vacuums

Dreame might be beating out the competition, at least for the iOS version of their app. They’ve passed Ecovacs for sure and are neck and neck with Roborock for our favorite app.

The L50 Ultra’s app offers nearly every feature you could want, along with extensive granular control over the robot’s subsystems. We used the iOS version of the app, which has much higher ratings than the Android version on the app stores.

Cons of the Dreame L50 Ultra

Every product has trade-offs, and this Dreame L50 Ultra Review wouldn’t be complete without looking at the areas where it falls short.

Battery Life Limitations

The L50 Ultra doesn’t have the most remarkable battery life. It has a massive 6,400mAh battery, and its official battery life on low power is above average.

Comparison chart of official robot mode battery life: Dreame L50 Ultra at 200 minutes vs average at 148 minutes.

However, in our battery life evaluation, which we run on various power settings (including those users likely use) and calculate the averages, the L50 Ultra proved less efficient.

Its battery efficiency score was well below average. Even when accounting for its highly efficient navigation, it ended up with an estimated square footage per charge that’s below average. It covered 823 sqft, compared to the average of 1,500 sqft.

Estimated square feet per charge comparison: Dreame L50 Ultra at 823 sq ft vs average at 1,015 sq ft.
Estimated coverage per charge falls below average for the L50 Ultra. ยฉ Vacuum Wars

That noted, the L50 Ultra does have a relatively rare fast charging feature, so it recharges very quickly. It also features a recharge and resume function. That means if the robot vacuum runs out of battery, it will simply return to its base to recharge and then resume cleaning where it left off on the map.

While battery life isnโ€™t a deal breaker, it remains the L50 Ultraโ€™s most notable shortcoming.

Water Flow Settings and Mopping Results

When using the robot vacuum on its lowest water setting, its mopping performance (especially with dried-on stains) was below average. We recommend using it on either its middle or slightly higher than middle water flow setting for better mopping results.

Price Considerations

The L50 Ultra robot vacuum is definitely selling at the top end, but it’s a typical price point for flagship models.

Dreame L50 Ultra Review: Conclusion and Recommendation

The L50 Ultra is well-positioned to maintain its spot at the top of the Vacuum Wars Top 20 Robot Vacuums list, provided no significant deal breakers or customer service issues emerge. We closely monitor these factors when updating our rankings.

All in all, the Dreame L50 Ultra blends top-tier cleaning power, smart navigation, and one of the most advanced docking systems we’ve ever evaluated. For many households, this may just be the new standard.
