Shop-Vac has announced two new handheld cleaning machines that combine portable spot cleaning with steam-cleaning capability, introducing a newer type of hybrid appliance that blends two categories usually kept separate.
Portable spot cleaners are typically designed for extracting spills and stains from carpets and upholstery using water, cleaning solution, and suction. Steam cleaners, on the other hand, are generally built for high-heat vapor cleaning on hard surfaces like tile, grout, kitchens, and bathrooms. By merging both functions into one tool, Shop-Vac appears to be leaning into an emerging “spot-and-steam cleaner combo” category.
The two newly released models are the Shop-Vac Portable Carpet Cleaner models 5430270 and 5430225, both designed to handle fabric stain extraction while also offering steam cleaning modes for broader household use.

Shop-Vac 5430270: Four Cleaning Modes and Expanded Steam Attachments
The Shop-Vac 5430270 is the larger and more feature-heavy of the two models. It includes four dedicated cleaning modes: Cold Water, Hot Water, Steam Washing, and Steam Cleaning. Shop-Vac says it can produce steam up to 212°F and hot water up to 140°F, allowing users to switch between quick spot treatments and higher-heat cleaning options depending on the mess.
This model uses a spray-scrub-suction approach for upholstery and carpet cleaning, while also including an adapter and multiple steam tools for use on surfaces like tile, grout, windows, kitchens, and bathrooms.
It features a larger dual-tank system, with a 64 oz clean water tank and a 48 oz dirty water tank, designed to keep clean and dirty water separated during use. The unit weighs about 12 pounds and includes a 5-foot hose and 10-foot cord.

Shop-Vac 5430225: A Smaller, Lighter Hybrid Option
The Shop-Vac 5430225 offers a more compact version of the same general concept, combining spot cleaning and steam cleaning in a lighter package.
It includes three cleaning modes: Cold Water, Hot Water (122–140°F), and Steam Mode up to 212°F. Shop-Vac positions it as a portable solution for everyday stains, with a smaller dual-tank design featuring a 44 oz clean water tank and a 60 oz dirty water tank.
At 9.9 pounds, the 5430225 is lighter than the 5430270 and is designed for easier portability, with a built-in handle and compact footprint. It includes a shorter accessory list, with core tools such as a multi-functional cleaning tool, cloth cover, steam jet nozzle, and measuring cup. Hose length is 5 feet, and cord length is 11 feet.

A New Combination Direction for Household Cleaning Tools
While multi-purpose cleaning appliances are not new, the combination of extraction-style spot cleaning with dedicated steam-cleaning functionality remains relatively uncommon in the current floor care market. Most consumers still purchase separate machines for upholstery stain removal and steam sanitizing.
Shop-Vac’s release of two models in this hybrid format may signal growing interest in an all-in-one approach for households looking to tackle both soft-surface stains and hard-surface steam cleaning with a single portable tool.
