Vacuum Wars Top 20: We’re Updating Our Ranking Method

At Vacuum Wars, we are committed to providing clear, objective, and reliable information to help consumers and professionals make informed decisions. One of the ways we do this is through our Top 20 Robot Vacuum Rankings, which have become a trusted resource for identifying standout products in a crowded and fast-evolving industry. Recently, based on thoughtful feedback from our community, we’ve made an important update to how we compile these rankings. We’re excited to share what’s changing — and why.

Why We Made This Change

Over the past year, we’ve noticed that pricing volatility was having an outsized impact on our Top 20 rankings. Because prices can fluctuate daily — especially on large online retail platforms — our rankings were sometimes shifting dramatically from day to day. This created confusion and did not reflect the true performance and long-term value of the products we test.

After reading through your feedback, it became clear: pricing should not be a factor in determining a vacuum’s place in our rankings. We appreciate the honesty and insight from our audience, and we agree that removing pricing will lead to a more stable, trustworthy list.

What’s Changing — and What’s Staying the Same

Here’s a breakdown of the updates:

  • Pricing will no longer be used as a ranking factor.
  • We will continue using select dynamic metrics like Amazon star ratings and App Store ratings in the ranking algorithm.
  • Amazon star ratings will only be factored in after a product has received at least 50 reviews. Until then, we assign a neutral default score of 4 stars to avoid early-stage skewing.
  • Although some day-to-day volatility may still occur (due to dynamic customer ratings), it should now be far less frequent.

Our goal is to make our rankings as useful and consistent as possible, without sacrificing fairness or transparency.

Our Approach to Measuring Customer Satisfaction

Long-term customer satisfaction remains an important element of how we evaluate products. While no metric is perfect, we currently use Amazon star ratings as one of the ways to gauge customer experience over time.

We recognize the limitations of this method. Star ratings can sometimes be influenced by factors outside a product’s core performance, and they don’t always tell the full story. That’s why we’re continuously exploring better, more reliable ways to measure customer satisfaction — and we’re open to ideas.
