Best (May 2026) Carpet Cleaners

Every month, Vacuum Wars publishes a “snapshot” article highlighting our Best Overall, Best Value, and Best Budget carpet cleaner picks. Unlike our continuously updated “Best” lists, these reports take a closer look at why each model earned its position and how it compares to competing options based on our latest testing.

For May 2026, our selections are based on the same standardized test protocol and scoring system used across the Vacuum Wars carpet cleaner database, which now includes nearly 30 major models. This includes controlled, repeatable evaluations such as colorimeter-based stain reduction testing, along with suction and water extraction measurements designed to reflect real-world cleaning performance.

This month’s rankings include one notable shift. The Shark CarpetXpert EX151 remains our Best Overall pick thanks to its continued balance of cleaning performance, lightweight design, and ease of use. However, the Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe has moved from our previous Budget category into the Best Value position, largely due to its strong overall performance relative to price. Meanwhile, the Bissell TurboClean Pet XL enters the rankings as our new Best Budget pick after delivering exceptional results for its price category in recent testing.

While our Top 10 Carpet Cleaner rankings are continuously updated, this monthly feature focuses on detailed, category-by-category analysis to provide additional context behind each selection.

May 2026: What Changed and Why It Matters:

There was some movement in our monthly carpet cleaner picks for May, particularly in the Value and Budget categories. While the Shark CarpetXpert EX151 remains our Best Overall pick thanks to its continued combination of strong cleaning performance, lightweight handling, and positive long-term user feedback, the Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe moved up from our previous Budget position into the Best Value category.

This change reflects the Hoover’s unusually strong performance relative to its price. Despite being one of the more affordable full-size carpet cleaners we’ve tested, it continues to deliver above-average stain removal and solid extraction performance, while also offering practical advantages like a large tank and versatile hose tools.

Meanwhile, the Bissell TurboClean Pet XL enters our rankings as the new Best Budget pick after recent testing showed exceptionally strong results for its price category. Its addition highlights how competitive lower-cost carpet cleaners have become, with some newer budget-oriented models delivering performance levels that would have previously required spending significantly more.

As always, Vacuum Wars rankings are based on both our controlled testing results and long-term ownership data. In addition to standardized evaluations like stain reduction and suction testing, we also track user review trends over time and incorporate that information into our scoring system to better reflect real-world reliability and owner satisfaction.

Best Overall Carpet Cleaner: Shark CarpetXpert EX151

Vacuum Wars Overall:  72.28

The Shark CarpetXpert EX151 is a lightweight hybrid carpet cleaner designed to balance performance and value, and testing showed it largely succeeds. It weighs just 15.9 pounds, making it easier to maneuver than the roughly 20-pound category average, and features strong ergonomics, a 25-foot cord, and a convenient built-in hose system for spot cleaning, stairs, and upholstery without extra setup. Attachments like the reversible bristle tool, wide path tool, and integrated crevice tool add versatility. In testing, it delivered above-average unsealed suction at the floor head and excellent stain removal, scoring near the top in a controlled grape juice stain test using timed passes and color measurement. However, there are downsides: its small 0.6-gallon water tank requires frequent refills on larger jobs, the 5-foot hose is shorter than average, and sealed hose suction tested slightly below average. Despite these issues, it ranked highly overall, offering near-flagship cleaning performance at a lower price, making it a strong value pick for users wanting effective cleaning, easy handling, and solid test-proven results. This combination of performance metrics and usability features helped it secure a top-three ranking among tested carpet cleaners in recent evaluations. See additional info

Why it Earned Best Overall

The Shark CarpetXpert EX151 remains our Best Overall carpet cleaner for May because it continues to offer the strongest overall balance of cleaning performance, usability, and value in our current testing. While newer and lower-cost competitors have entered the rankings, the EX151 still distinguishes itself with above-average stain removal, strong suction performance, lightweight handling, and one of the most user-friendly designs in the category.

In our testing, it performs at a level comparable to more expensive models while remaining easier to maneuver and more convenient for everyday use than many traditional full-size carpet cleaners. Its integrated hose system and included attachments also help it stand out in versatility, particularly for users who frequently clean stairs, upholstery, or spot messes.

While carpet cleaners frequently have larger tanks, like the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam (see our review), the EX151 stands out for its more modern, user-friendly design without a meaningful drop in cleaning performance. The tradeoffs, such as a smaller tank and shorter hose, are noticeable but do not outweigh its strengths in everyday use.

Overall, the EX151 strikes the best balance across key categories, making it the most well-rounded option for the widest range of users.

CarpetXpert EX151 Stain Test Score: 90.1 (Avg 83.5)

The Shark CarpetXpert EX151 stood out in our testing with a stain test score of 90.1, significantly outperforming the category average of 83.5. This places it among the top performers in its class, demonstrating strong ability to lift and remove set-in stains in a controlled, repeatable test. That high score reflects not just effective cleaning chemistry, but also its combination of strong suction and consistent water distribution, which helps extract more residue from deep within the carpet pile rather than leaving it behind.

CarpetXpert EX151 Suction and Extraction

The Shark CarpetXpert EX151 impressed in our suction and extraction performance, with 12.40 kPa of usable (unsealed) suction at the floorhead—well above the category average of 7.25—making it highly effective at extracting dirty water from deep within the carpet pile. Its sealed hose suction measured 58 inches, which is slightly below the average of 65, but it still performed well in our stain test. For best results, users may want to use the floorhead to extract remaining moisture after spot cleaning in order to expedite drying times.

Capacity and Practical Design Advantages

As we said above, the Shark CarpetXpert EX151 performed well in spot cleaning and overall versatility, thanks largely to its built-in hose system and included attachments. Unlike many carpet cleaners that require attaching a separate hose, the EX151 integrates a handheld spot and stain eliminator directly into the unit, making it faster and more convenient to switch to above-floor cleaning. It comes with multiple tools—including a 3.5″ stain tool, a wider 7″ tool, and an integrated crevice tool—allowing it to handle everything from small spills and upholstery to stairs and tight spaces.

If spot cleaning is a particularly important feature for you, the Shark CarpetXpert EX301 or EX304 (see our review) stands out by offering the most attachments and being the only models in Shark’s current lineup with an onboard hose self-cleaning system. This system sprays water through the hose to clean it, which is especially valuable if you frequently handle messy jobs.

The Shark lineup of household carpet cleaners tends to have smaller water tanks than many competitors, which helps keep their design closer in size to an upright vacuum rather than a traditional carpet cleaner. The average carpet cleaner we’ve tested holds about one gallon of water, while the EX301 holds just 0.6 gallons. As a result, if you’re cleaning a large area, you will likely need to empty and refill the tank more frequently.

Why it Earned Best Value

The Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe moves into our Best Value position for May because it delivers above-average cleaning performance and practical full-size features at a highly competitive price point. Previously our Best Budget pick, the Hoover continues to stand out as one of the strongest overall bargains in the category, especially for users who prioritize reliable carpet cleaning performance over premium extras.

The Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe’s move into the Best Value category reflects just how competitive its performance remains, even against newer models entering the market.

Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe Stain Test Score: 86.08 (Avg 83.5)

In Vacuum Wars’ standardized stain testing, the Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe achieved a score of 86.08, placing it above the category average of 83.5. This indicates strong performance in removing dried, set-in stains, especially considering its lower price tier. While it doesn’t quite reach the top-tier scores of premium models, its results demonstrate that it remains a capable cleaner that can handle typical household messes effectively.

Suction and Extraction

In Vacuum Wars’ power evaluations, the Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe measured 7.62 kPa of usable (unsealed) suction at the floorhead, slightly above the category average of 7.25 kPa. This supports solid extraction performance during standard cleaning passes.

Its sealed hose suction measured 60 inches, which is below the category average of 65, indicating somewhat less concentrated suction when using hose attachments. In practice, this means it performs best during full floor cleaning, while hose-based cleaning may require more time or additional passes.

Capacity and Practical Design Advantages

The Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe features a traditional upright design with a 1-gallon clean water tank, allowing for longer cleaning sessions compared to many compact models. It uses a dual-tank system to separate clean and dirty water, and its trigger-based solution dispensing gives users direct control over water usage. The unit also includes an 8-foot hose with multiple attachments for stairs, upholstery, and spot cleaning, making it a versatile option for whole-home use. Its SpinScrub brush system—designed with rotating brushes that move horizontally—also makes it particularly effective on longer-pile carpets, where some brushroll-style cleaners may struggle.

Best Budget Carpet Cleaner: Bissell TurboClean Pet XL

Vacuum Wars Overall: 43.55

Upright blue-and-black floor scrubber on a rug in a living room, ready for use near a brown sofa.

The Bissell TurboClean Pet XL 3746 stands out as a strong value carpet cleaner, retailing around $160—roughly half the cost of flagship models—while outperforming many budget competitors with features like a 7-foot hose for above-floor cleaning and a versatile 3-in-1 tough stain tool. It has a one-gallon clean and dirty water tank, reducing refill frequency compared to similarly priced units, and weighs just 16.5 pounds, making it lighter and easier to maneuver than average. A 20-foot cord provides decent range, and its four-row DeepReach brush contributes to solid cleaning results. In testing, it achieved an average stain removal score on a standardized grape juice test—impressive given that it competed against over 30 models, including much more expensive machines. However, its 6-amp motor delivers below-average suction in both sealed and unsealed tests, which could impact performance on heavily embedded dirt. Despite this, it ranked 9th overall, offering excellent performance and features for the price. See additional info

Why it Earned Best Budget

The Bissell TurboClean Pet XL earns our Best Budget pick for May because it delivers an unusually strong combination of performance, features, and versatility at a very affordable price point. In our recent testing, it performed significantly better than we expected for its category, holding its own against carpet cleaners that cost substantially more.

What makes the TurboClean Pet XL stand out is that it avoids many of the compromises typically associated with budget carpet cleaners. While most lower-cost models strip away features to reduce price, the TurboClean Pet XL includes practical upgrades like a 7-foot hose for above-floor cleaning, a 3-inch tough stain tool, a spraying crevice attachment, and large one-gallon clean and dirty water tanks. These features make it more versatile and easier to use for whole-home cleaning compared to many competitors under $200.

Bissell TurboClean Pet XL Stain Test Score: 82.7 (Avg 83.5)

In Vacuum Wars’ standardized stain testing, the TurboClean Pet XL scored 82.7, placing it very close to the category average of 83.5. While that may initially sound modest, it becomes much more impressive when considering the machines it competed against. Many carpet cleaners in our database cost significantly more, yet the TurboClean Pet XL remained competitive in overall stain removal performance.

Its cleaning system uses Bissell’s 4-Row DeepReach PowerBrush, which appears to help compensate for the machine’s relatively modest suction power by improving agitation deep within the carpet fibers.

Suction and Extraction

The TurboClean Pet XL’s biggest weakness is raw suction power. Its 6-amp motor performed below average in both our sealed and unsealed suction tests, which could reduce effectiveness when dealing with heavily embedded dirt or very saturated carpet.

However, in practical cleaning performance, this drawback was less noticeable than expected. The machine still achieved competitive stain-removal results overall, suggesting that its brush design and water distribution system help offset the weaker suction performance in many everyday cleaning scenarios.

Capacity and Practical Design Advantages

One of the strongest advantages of the TurboClean Pet XL is its balance of usability and capacity. Unlike many compact budget carpet cleaners, it includes full-size one-gallon clean and dirty water tanks, reducing interruptions from frequent refills and emptying. It also weighs only 16.5 pounds, making it lighter and easier to maneuver than many midrange carpet cleaners.

For users who need even larger tank capacity, it’s worth looking into more professional-grade carpet cleaners like the Bissell Big Green Professional (see our review). That model features a much larger overall design, including a 1.75-gallon tank and a 9-foot hose, making it better suited for particularly large cleaning areas or heavier-duty jobs.

The included hose and attachments also help separate it from ultra-budget competitors. Many machines at this price point omit above-floor cleaning entirely, but the TurboClean Pet XL’s hose system makes it more practical for stairs, upholstery, pet beds, and spot cleaning around the home.

Overall, the Bissell TurboClean Pet XL impressed us by delivering better-than-expected real-world performance while offering features rarely seen at this price. For shoppers looking for an affordable carpet cleaner that still feels capable and versatile, it stands out as one of the strongest budget options we’ve tested so far.

FAQ Carpet Cleaner Buying Guidance

What matters most when buying a carpet cleaner?

At Vacuum Wars, no single metric determines the outcome—our rankings are based on combined performance across stain removal, suction/extraction, drying performance, usability, capacity, and features.

In practical terms:

  • Stain removal determines how well a cleaner handles real-world messes, especially dried stains.
  • Extraction (suction) affects how much dirty water is pulled back out of the carpet, which impacts drying time.
  • Capacity and overall design influence how convenient the machine is for larger cleaning jobs and extended use.

For example, the Shark CarpetXpert EX151 stands out for its balance of cleaning performance and usability, while the Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe offers larger full-size capacity at a lower price point.

How important is suction in a carpet cleaner?

Suction is important, but where it’s measured matters.

  • Usable (unsealed) suction at the floorhead affects how effectively the machine extracts water from carpet during normal cleaning.
  • Sealed hose suction affects performance when using hose tools and attachments.

For example, the Shark EX151 performed particularly well in floor-level extraction, while some full-size models prioritize stronger hose performance for spot cleaning tasks. In most cases, strong floorhead extraction has the biggest impact on overall cleaning effectiveness and drying performance.

Are budget carpet cleaners still effective?

Yes. Some budget carpet cleaners now perform much better than their low price would suggest.

The Bissell TurboClean Pet XL, for example, delivered stain-removal performance that remained competitive with much more expensive models in our testing, while also including features rarely seen at its price point—such as a hose for above-floor cleaning and full-size one-gallon tanks. Likewise, the Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe continues to provide above-average cleaning performance despite being one of the more affordable full-size carpet cleaners we’ve tested.

While budget models may lack some premium refinements or maximum suction power, many are still highly capable for routine household cleaning.

Should I choose a larger, full-size machine or a lighter model?

This depends on your cleaning priorities.

  • Full-size models (like the Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe) typically offer larger tanks and longer uninterrupted cleaning sessions, making them better suited for larger homes or heavy-duty cleaning.
  • Lighter models (like the Shark EX151) are easier to maneuver, easier to store, and generally more convenient for everyday use.

Both approaches can clean effectively—the main difference is balancing capacity and runtime against convenience and handling.

Are carpet cleaners meant for hard floors?

Most full-size carpet cleaners are designed specifically for carpets and rugs. Using them on hard floors is generally not recommended unless the manufacturer explicitly supports it.

If hard floor cleaning is a major priority, a dedicated wet/dry vacuum or hard floor cleaner is usually a better option.
