Best (May 2026) Upright Vacuums

Vacuum Wars publishes these monthly snapshots to spotlight three standouts across the price spectrum from our database of 50+ upright models. While every vacuum undergoes our standardized suite of sealed suction, airflow, and hair-tangle stress tests, May 2026 presents a unique shift: the gap between budget hardware and flagship performance has never been thinner. Our rankings are dynamic and shift as the market evolves—for the most current data, see our Top 10 Best Upright Vacuums list.

May 2026 brought a significant shake-up to our upright vacuum picks, with changes across every major category. The biggest shift came at the top, where the Shark Stratos replaced the long-standing Shark PowerDetect as our Best Overall upright vacuum. While both models performed extremely well in testing, the Stratos gradually pulled ahead thanks to consistently strong long-term user reviews. With the Stratos moving into the top spot, the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off stepped into its previous position as our Best Value pick. The Bissell is a newer release that also earned strong marks in our recent testing, particularly for its pet-focused features and overall performance. Our Budget pick changed as well, with the Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up moving into the category after steadily climbing the rankings due to positive user feedback, versatile Lift-Up functionality, and a feature set that stands out at its price point.

Below, we break down our three May picks—analyzing key performance and usability metrics and how they compare to the rest of our testing pool.

The Shark Stratos stays one of the easiest “value” recommendations we can make in the premium upright world because it delivers flagship-level cleaning capability without requiring you to pay flagship pricing—especially when it’s on sale. We think it is an exceptional premium performer with extremely strong suction/airflow, excellent multi-surface pickup, and a roller design that improves its carpet cleaning capabilities.

Performance (Stratos: 4.52 vs Avg: 2.84)

In our testing, the Stratos produced far-above-average suction and airflow results:

  • Suction at hose: 104″ (vs 80″ average)
  • Airflow at hose: 100 cfm (vs 79 cfm average)
  • Unsealed suction: 0.76 kPa (vs 0.49 kPa average)

The Stratos passed every pickup evaluation we put it through—essentially the “no drama” result you want from a premium upright that may be used weekly for years. And like the PowerDetect, the Stratos has the DuoClean brushroll, Shark’s dual-roller floorhead with a soft front roller for hard floors and a PowerFins brushroll. This has been a successful design for the Shark lineup, such as with the Rotator LA502 (See our review) and Vertex (See our review) upright vacuums.

For pet owners, Stratos’s self-cleaning brushroll performance stands out. In our hair evaluations, we didn’t find hair tangled on the brushroll after running both 7″ and 14″ human hair tests.

Features (Stratos: 3.98 vs Avg: 1.70)

Stratos has the premium Shark trait that matters a lot in real homes: Powered Lift-Away, keeping the brush powered when the pod is detached for under-furniture cleaning, and allowing for easy above floor cleaning with handheld attachments and the hose.

The Shark Stratos using Powered Lift-Away, allowing the brushroll to stay active for under-furniture cleaning and enabling easy above-floor cleaning with attachments © Vacuum Wars

Without the Detect features of the PowerDetect, the Stratos did not obtain as high of a score as the PowerDetect, but its robust attachment set is an improvement over the likes of many other uprights. We specifically like the HairPro Self-cleaning Pet Power Brush for pet owners who will be using their vacuum to remove pet hair from household surfaces as well as from their floors.

Hard Floor (Stratos: 4.80 vs Avg: 2.98)

In our hard floor testing, the Shark Stratos delivered excellent performance, earning one of the highest scores in this category and demonstrating top-tier pickup across a wide range of debris types. Its DuoClean system allowed it to efficiently capture everything from fine dust to larger particles with minimal scatter. The strong suction and airflow—among the highest in Shark’s upright lineup—further contributed to its ability to clean thoroughly in fewer passes, making it a highly effective option for hard floors overall.

We also were happy with the Shark Vertex‘s (See our review) performance on hard floors, where it also had a score of 4.8. However, it demonstrated a lesser performance in our Carpet Deep Clean test, which brought down its overall Vacuum Wars score.

Carpet (Stratos: 4.80 vs Avg: 3.10)

In our carpet testing, the Shark Stratos delivered top-tier performance, earning one of the highest scores in this category and standing out for both surface pickup and deep cleaning. It removed virtually all visible debris in our surface tests, thanks to its powerful suction and DuoClean PowerFins system, which effectively agitates carpet fibers. More importantly, it excelled in deep cleaning, lifting embedded dirt from within the carpet at a level that places it among the best Shark uprights we’ve tested. This strong combination of surface-level efficiency and deep extraction capability makes it especially well-suited for homes with carpets and pet hair.

As we mentioned above, if you’re cross-shopping the Shark Vertex (See our review), note that it has a lower Carpet score (3.64) even while having much in common with the Stratos, like DuoClean Rollers and Powered Lift-Away.

Attachments (Stratos: 5.0 vs Avg: 2.96)

In our attachment testing, the Shark Stratos delivered excellent results, earning a top-tier score thanks to its well-rounded and effective toolset. It includes a variety of purpose-built attachments, such as a powered pet tool, crevice tool, and upholstery tool, which together allowed it to handle above-floor cleaning tasks like stairs, furniture, and tight spaces with ease. The powered pet tool in particular gave it an advantage for removing embedded hair on upholstery, while the overall combination of tools made it highly versatile in real-world use. Overall, its attachment performance was among the best we’ve tested, contributing to its strong all-around usability.

The Shark Stratos attachment set, featuring a powered pet tool and multiple accessories designed for versatile above-floor cleaning tasks © Vacuum Wars

We compared the Shark Stratos’ attachment set to the Kenmore Intuition (See our review), which comes with a Pet HandiMate attachment. This is specifically designed for removing pet hair and embedded debris from above-floor surfaces, but instead of relying only on suction, it uses airflow to spin an internal brush roll. Because it is not motorized, this Kenmore received a slightly lower Attachment score of 4.7.

The Verdict: Shark Stratos Powered Lift-Away

The Bottom Line: If the PowerDetect is the “smart” flagship, the Stratos is the “performance” workhorse. For those who don’t necessarily need automated sensors but want the absolute maximum in deep-cleaning scores and odor-neutralizing tech, the Stratos is the better value. It offers nearly identical raw pickup power to the newest flagship but often sits at a more aggressive price point. It remains our top recommendation for “value-conscious” power users who want a premium, sealed-system upright.

Best Value Upright Vacuum: Bissell Pet Hair Allergen Lift-Off

Vacuum Wars Score: 4.28 ⭐

The Bissell Pet Hair Allergen Lift-Off 39883 is a low-cost upright that impressed in testing with strong performance and value, featuring a tangle-free brush roll, squeegee to reduce scatter, and large front gates that improved large-debris pickup on hard floors and carpets compared to Shark Navigator models. In tests, it achieved solid pickup scores on both surfaces, handled everything from fine dust to large debris like cereal without snowplowing, and earned a perfect 100% deep-clean score by removing embedded sand from medium-pile carpet. Hair tests showed very good resistance to tangling with 7-inch strands and moderate performance with 14-inch hair. It also passed a sealed filtration fog test, offers responsive swivel steering, Lift-Off detachable canister, quick-release wand, and above-average sealed suction with more than double the unsealed suction of some Shark variants. Included tools like a TurboEraser pet tool add versatility. Downsides include a slightly smaller dustbin, about half-pound heavier weight, and a somewhat awkward Lift-Off button and handle design, plus less modular detachment than Shark. Overall, it delivers excellent all-around cleaning performance and top-tier value at around $150, making it a standout budget option in its category. See additional info

Why We Picked It — Vacuum Wars Score 4.28

The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off stood out because it offers an unusually balanced mix of cleaning performance, usability, and features at its price point. In many ways, it feels like a more modern interpretation of the classic value upright design popularized by products like the Shark Navigator Lift-Away, but with meaningful upgrades that improve everyday cleaning. Features like the tangle-free brush roll, sealed filtration system, Lift-Off canister, front debris gates, and included TurboEraser pet attachment all contribute to a vacuum that performs well across multiple cleaning scenarios without pushing into premium pricing territory. It was especially impressive in homes with pets and mixed flooring, which is why it ultimately earned our Best Value designation for May 2026.

Performance (Bissell Pet Hair Allergen: 3.52 vs Avg: 2.84)

The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen scored well above the category average in overall performance, largely because it delivered consistently strong results across a wide variety of tests. It handled fine debris, larger debris, embedded dirt, and pet hair better than many uprights in its price range. Its sealed suction performance was also above average, helping maintain airflow and improving attachment cleaning performance. One area where it clearly separated itself from older Shark Navigator models was its ability to handle larger debris without snowplowing, thanks to its larger front gates and updated floorhead design. Combined with excellent deep-clean carpet performance and good maneuverability, the Bissell proved to be one of the most capable budget uprights we’ve tested recently.

Comparison of floor head gate designs on upright vacuums, showing a single narrow gate on the top brush roll and three larger front debris gates on the bottom brush roll designed to improve larger debris pickup.
The Bissell’s larger front debris gates help it handle bigger debris more effectively than many budget uprights, though the wider openings can slightly reduce seal performance in certain tests. © Vacuum Wars

Features (Bissell Pet Hair Allergen: 3.55 vs Avg: 1.70)

Feature-wise, the Bissell scored dramatically above the upright vacuum average because it includes several capabilities that are still uncommon at this price. The tangle-free brush roll was particularly effective during our hair-wrap testing, showing almost no tangling with shorter hair and only minimal residue with longer strands. It also includes a sealed filtration system, swivel steering, Lift-Off detachable pod, quick-release wand, and specialized pet tools. Compared to older value-oriented uprights like the Shark Navigator series, the Bissell simply feels more current in terms of design priorities, especially for homes dealing with pet hair and multi-surface cleaning. These kinds of usability upgrades played a major role in its high feature score.

Hard Floor (Bissell Pet Hair Allergen: 3.0 vs Avg: 2.98)

On hard floors, the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen performed slightly above average overall, but what impressed us most was its consistency with larger debris pickup. The front gates and squeegee system helped reduce scatter and allowed it to pick up everything from fine dust to larger debris like cereal without needing multiple passes. That’s an area where older low-profile designs, including some Shark Navigator variants, can struggle. The Bissell’s hard floor performance was not necessarily class-leading in raw numbers, but it was dependable and versatile in real-world cleaning situations, which is ultimately more important for most users.

Carpet (Bissell Pet Hair Allergen: 4.80 vs Avg: 3.10)

Carpet cleaning was one of the Bissell’s strongest categories by far. It earned an outstanding carpet score thanks to exceptional debris pickup and perfect deep-clean test results. In our embedded dirt evaluation, it removed 100% of the test material from medium-pile carpet at max power, placing it alongside some of the best-performing uprights we’ve tested. It also handled a wide range of debris sizes effectively, from fine dust to larger particles, without bogging down or snowplowing. The combination of strong suction, effective agitation, and thoughtful floorhead design made it especially capable on carpeted surfaces, significantly outperforming the category average.

One reason the Bissell stands out in terms of value is that it remains capable across a wider range of debris types. © Vacuum Wars

Attachments (Bissell Pet Hair Allergen: 5.0 vs Avg: 2.96)

The Bissell earned a perfect attachment score because its above-floor cleaning setup is unusually strong for this price range. The Lift-Off detachable pod makes stair cleaning and upholstery work much easier, while the included TurboEraser pet tool adds genuine cleaning power for furniture and pet hair. The quick-release wand system also makes transitions between floor cleaning and attachment use fast and intuitive. While Shark helped popularize detachable pod designs years ago, the Bissell combines that versatility with more modern accessory integration, making it one of the best upright vacuums in this category for above-floor cleaning tasks.

The Verdict: Bissell Pet Hair Allergen

The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off delivers one of the best overall value propositions in the upright vacuum market today. It combines strong carpet cleaning, capable hard floor performance, effective pet-hair management, and a feature set that far exceeds what we normally expect at this price. More importantly, it feels like an updated take on the traditional value upright formula, improving on several weaknesses found in older designs while keeping the affordability that made those vacuums popular in the first place. For shoppers looking for a versatile upright vacuum under $200, the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off is currently one of the easiest recommendations we can make.

Best Budget Upright Vacuum: Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up

Vacuum Wars Score: 4.09 ⭐

Kenmore Bagless Lift Up Vacuum Cleaner at the Vacuum Wars Studio

We are impressed by the Kenmore DU5092 bagless upright vacuum’s performance, particularly in debris pickup on various surfaces and its versatility due to multiple attachments. Its standout features include a hair eliminator nozzle, LED lights for spotting hidden debris, and HEPA filtration for excellent air quality. Despite some drawbacks in unsealed suction, it offers great value for its price, making it a reliable choice for homeowners. See additional info

Why We Picked It — Vacuum Wars Score 4.09

The Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up earned our Best Budget Upright Vacuum pick for May 2026 because it delivers unusually strong cleaning performance and features for its price category. While last month we selected the Kenmore Featherlite as our budget recommendation, ongoing user feedback consistently favored the DU5092 due to its stronger overall usability, better versatility, and more capable attachment system. In particular, users appreciated the Lift-Up functionality, large debris handling, sealed HEPA filtration, and pet-focused features that are often missing in lower-priced uprights. The result is a vacuum that feels far more complete than most budget options while still maintaining a highly competitive price point.

Performance (Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up: 3.61 vs Avg: 2.84)

The Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up scored significantly above the category average in overall performance because it handled a wide variety of cleaning tasks exceptionally well. It performed strongly with both fine debris and larger debris on carpets and hard floors, aided in part by its unusually large front gates. These allowed it to pick up material that many budget uprights struggle with.

Kenmore vacuum successfully vacuuming large debris on a carpet.

The Kenmore DU5092’s large front gates help it handle larger debris on carpets more effectively than many budget uprights, contributing to its strong overall pickup performance. © Vacuum Wars

That said, we found that the DU5092 scored slightly below average in both unsealed suction and crevice pickup. However, both of these results are tied to the same design trade-off. The large front gates that improve larger debris pickup also allow more air into the system, creating a weaker seal in certain tests. Kenmore appears to have made this compromise intentionally in favor of better overall debris handling, and we generally agree with that decision since improved real-world debris pickup is likely more valuable for most users than maximizing seal performance alone.

Features (Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up: 3.68 vs Avg: 1.70)

Feature performance was one of the biggest reasons the DU5092 rose to the top of the budget category. It includes a surprisingly complete package for the price, featuring a Lift-Up detachable pod, swivel steering, LED headlights, sealed HEPA filtration, and an effective hair eliminator nozzle that helps reduce brush roll tangles automatically. These are features typically associated with more expensive uprights.

The sealed filtration system was especially notable, as fully sealed systems remain relatively uncommon among budget vacuums. Compared to many older budget upright designs, including some long-running Shark value models, the Kenmore feels more modern and feature-rich while maintaining a similarly accessible price point.

Hard Floor (Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up: 2.60 vs Avg: 2.98)

Hard floor performance was the one category where the Kenmore scored slightly below the upright average, though the trade-off appears intentional. Its very large front gates allow it to excel with larger debris pickup, but they also reduce seal efficiency somewhat on hard floors. Even so, it remained capable in everyday cleaning situations and handled mixed debris sizes well. The vacuum prioritized versatility and larger debris management over maximizing hard-floor seal performance, which many users may actually prefer in practical home use. Overall, while it was not class-leading on hard floors, it still provided dependable results and excellent debris range handling for the budget category.

Kenmore vacuum approaching fine debris on a hard floor.
Kenmore vacuum successfully vacuuming fine debris on a hard floor.
While the Kenmore DU5092 prioritizes larger debris pickup over maximum seal performance, it still delivers dependable hard floor cleaning in everyday use. © Vacuum Wars

Carpet (Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up: 4.80 vs Avg: 3.10)

Carpet cleaning was one of the DU5092’s strongest categories. It achieved a perfect 100% score in our carpet deep-clean evaluation, where embedded sand is worked into medium-pile carpet and measured for removal efficiency. Beyond deep cleaning, it also performed extremely well with surface debris pickup across multiple debris sizes. The combination of strong agitation, solid suction performance, and wide debris intake made it especially effective on carpeted surfaces. This level of carpet performance is uncommon in the budget upright segment and played a major role in its overall ranking.

Attachments (Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up: 4.70 vs Avg: 2.96)

The Kenmore scored far above average for attachments because it offers strong above-floor versatility at a budget price. The Lift-Up detachable pod makes stair and upholstery cleaning much easier, while the included Pet HandiMate tool adds effective pet-hair cleaning for furniture and fabric surfaces. It also includes a versatile three-in-one combo tool that combines a crevice tool, upholstery tool, and dusting brush. The detachable hose and wand further improve usability during above-floor tasks. Similar to what made products like the Shark Navigator popular years ago, the Kenmore emphasizes flexibility and convenience, but it does so with a more modern feature set and stronger included attachment package.

The Verdict: Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up

The Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up stands out because it offers premium-style functionality at a genuinely budget-friendly price. It combines strong carpet cleaning, versatile above-floor usability, sealed HEPA filtration, effective hair management, and a highly practical attachment system in a package that consistently impressed both in testing and in user feedback. While the Kenmore Featherlite previously held this spot, the DU5092 ultimately earned the edge because users repeatedly highlighted its superior versatility and more complete feature set in real-world ownership. For shoppers looking for the best budget upright vacuum in May 2026, the Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up represents one of the strongest overall values currently available.

Buying Guidance FAQ

What is the best upright vacuum overall for May 2026?

Our top overall upright vacuum pick for May 2026 is the Shark Stratos Powered Lift-Away. It earned a perfect Vacuum Wars Score of 5.0 thanks to its excellent suction, strong carpet deep-cleaning ability, premium attachment set, and versatile Powered Lift-Away design.

Why did the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off win Best Value?

The Bissell earned our Best Value designation because it combines strong cleaning performance, useful pet-focused features, and excellent versatility at a relatively affordable price. Features like its tangle-free brush roll, Lift-Off canister, sealed filtration system, and TurboEraser pet tool helped it outperform many vacuums in its price category.

Why did the Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up replace the Kenmore Featherlite as the Budget Pick?

While the Kenmore Featherlite was previously our Budget Pick, continued user feedback favored the DU5092 due to its stronger versatility, Lift-Up functionality, better attachment system, and more complete feature package. Those real-world ownership impressions helped move it ahead in our rankings.

Which upright vacuum performed best on carpet in your tests?

Both the Shark Stratos and the Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up earned outstanding carpet scores, while the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off also delivered exceptional results. All three vacuums performed extremely well in our carpet deep-clean evaluations, including removing embedded dirt from medium-pile carpet.

Are sealed HEPA filtration systems important in upright vacuums?

Yes. A sealed HEPA filtration system helps trap fine dust and allergens inside the vacuum rather than allowing particles to leak back into the air. This can be especially beneficial for allergy sufferers and pet owners. All three of our May 2026 upright picks include sealed filtration systems.

Which upright vacuum is best for pet hair?

The Shark Stratos and Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off both performed particularly well for homes with pets. Each includes anti-tangle brush roll technology and specialized pet tools designed for removing hair from carpets, upholstery, and stairs.

What is the advantage of Lift-Away or Lift-Up functionality?

Lift-Away or Lift-Up designs allow the vacuum’s canister or pod to detach from the floor head, making it easier to clean stairs, furniture, upholstery, and other above-floor areas. These systems also improve maneuverability in tighter spaces and under furniture.

Why do some vacuums with larger debris gates score lower in hard floor seal tests?

Larger front gates improve a vacuum’s ability to pick up medium and large debris, but they can also allow more air into the system, slightly reducing seal efficiency in certain tests. Manufacturers sometimes intentionally make this trade-off to improve overall real-world debris pickup performance.

Are budget upright vacuums still worth buying in 2026?

Yes. One of the biggest trends we observed in May 2026 was how much closer budget vacuums have come to premium-level performance. Models like the Kenmore Bagless Lift-Up now include features such as sealed HEPA filtration, anti-tangle technology, swivel steering, and detachable pods at much lower price points than in previous years.

How often do Vacuum Wars upright vacuum rankings change?

Our rankings are dynamic and update as new products are tested and long-term user feedback evolves. Changes in reliability, user satisfaction, and updated scoring data can all influence future rankings and category picks.
