The Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty is a newer cordless vacuum similar to the flagship Clean & Empty, but with a few key differences, all of which we cover in this full review. As usual, we bought this cordless vacuum with our own money and put it through a series of evaluations to see how well it held up against the flagship PowerDetect. We found that there were some clear advantages to the lighter design, along with a few trade-offs.
The Quick Verdict: Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty
The Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty is a lighter version of Sharkâs flagship PowerDetect Clean & Empty that retains many of its most useful features, including an auto-empty charging dock, MultiFLEX wand, strong pickup performance, and three of Sharkâs four PowerDetect technologies. In our evaluations, it earned perfect scores in both hard floor and carpet pickup and performed especially well in sealed suction. The biggest tradeoff is its floorhead design: unlike the flagship, it doesn’t have Sharkâs DuoClean dual-roller system, which contributed to weaker unsealed suction and crevice pickup. Overall, it performed well enough to make our Top 10 Cordless Vacuums list and became the second-best Shark cordless vacuum we’ve assessed.

The Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty is a lighter alternative to Sharkâs flagship PowerDetect cordless vacuum, combining strong pickup performance with an auto-empty charging dock, MultiFLEX wand, and three PowerDetect technologies.
Auto-Empty Charging Dock | MultiFLEX Wand | PowerDetect Technology
Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty Overview
The PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty functions much like the original flagship PowerDetect (see our review). Its list price is lower than the original, but both models frequently go on sale and can sometimes end up at around the same price.
It has three cleaning modesâEco, Detect, and Boostâand converts to a hand vacuum for cleaning above the floor. When youâre done cleaning, placing it back on the dock both charges the battery and automatically empties the vacuumâs dustbin.

One of the biggest differences from the flagship PowerDetect is the floorhead. Unlike the flagship, the PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty lacks Sharkâs DuoClean dual-roller system. And while we often see the absence of a soft front roller affect pickup performance, that turned out to be more complicated with this model (more on this shortly).

The PowerDetect Speed includes two attachments: a crevice tool and a pet multi-tool.

Ergonomics and MultiFLEX Wand
Probably the biggest selling point for the PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty is its ergonomics. It has good swivel steering along with Sharkâs MultiFLEX wand, which bends so you can reach farther underneath furniture. MultiFLEX also lets the vacuum fold over on itself for compact storage and stand on its own, something most cordless vacuums cannot do.

Lightweight Cordless Vacuum
It’s relatively lightweight, too. Shark lists its overall weight at 7 pounds, compared with 8.1 pounds for the flagship PowerDetect Clean & Empty.

We also measure handle weight because that’s where you feel most of the weight while using a cordless vacuum. The PowerDetect Speed measured 1,602 grams (3.53 pounds), compared with 1,804 grams (3.98 pounds) for the flagship. Our current cordless vacuum average is 1,512 grams (3.33 pounds). So while the cordless vacuum’s handle weight was just a little above our average, it was still almost half a pound lighter than the flagship.

Why You Can Trust Vacuum Wars Cordless Vacuum Reviews
Vacuum Wars remains fully independent â we purchase every cordless vacuum we test and never take manufacturer money or freebies. Every model goes through the same exact test regimen, so our results stay objective and data-driven. To learn more about our testing process,
Hard Floor and Carpet Pickup Performance
Another major advantage of this model was its pickup ability. The PowerDetect Speed earned a perfect score in both our hard floor and carpet pickup evaluations, picking up everything from fine to extra-large debris. That’s relatively rare for a floorhead without a DuoClean-style soft front roller.
It even did really well in our carpet deep-clean evaluation. For this assessment, we embed sand into medium-pile carpet and weigh the vacuumâs bin before and after a set number of passes. The PowerDetect Speed recovered 98% of the embedded debris, compared with our current cordless vacuum average of 93%. Shark’s flagship PowerDetect recovered 100% in the same assessment.
So the Speed was slightly behind its more expensive sibling, but still well above average.
| Test | PowerDetect Speed | PowerDetect | Vacuum Wars Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard Floor Pickup | 5 | 5 | 3.5 |
| Carpet Pickup | 5 | 5 | 3.9 |
| Carpet Deep Clean | 98% | 100% | 93% |

We did notice that fine debris sometimes required a few more passes than with a DuoClean head, but the PowerDetect Speed still picked everything up in the end.
Non-DuoClean brushrolls also commonly snowplow extra-large debris because the front of the floorhead can’t get over it. However, we didn’t see that problem with the Speed Clean & Empty. Shark may have intentionally made the front gates larger to accommodate bigger debris, although that design choice appears to come with some other trade-offs weâll cover shortly.
Suction and Airflow
The Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty scored above average in almost all of our raw power measurements.
Its wand airflow was 48 CFM compared with our average of 42 CFM. Head airflow was closer to the average but still slightly higher, measuring 39 CFM compared with the 37 CFM average.
Its sealed suction result was particularly strong at 122 inches of water lift. That was significantly higher than our current 73-inch average and even higher than the 112 inches we measured with the flagship PowerDetect. So the Speed was above average across all three power measurements, with sealed suction standing out as the strongest result.
| Power Test | PowerDetect Speed | PowerDetect | Vacuum Wars Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wand Airflow | 48 CFM | 50 CFM | 42 CFM |
| Head Airflow | 39 CFM | 42 CFM | 37 CFM |
| Sealed Suction | 122 in. | 112 in. | 73 in. |
Battery Life and Efficiency
This is a common concern with cordless vacuums, and Shark has been delivering strong battery performance lately.
The PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty is rated for 60 minutes of runtime on low power, which is significantly higher than our current average of 45 minutes. However, it ran for 11.9 minutes in our high-power assessment, which was below the 13.5-minute average.
| Battery Test | PowerDetect Speed | PowerDetect | Vacuum Wars Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low Power | 60 min. | 70 min. | 45 min. |
| High Power | 11.9 min. | 13 min. | 13.5 min. |
| Max Battery + Airflow Score | 19.96 | 21.10 | 15.85 |
A slightly smaller battery may be one of the sacrifices Shark made to keep the PowerDetect Speed as lightweight as possible. But when we combined its battery and airflow measurements into our battery-efficiency score, the result showed that it used its available battery capacity efficiently.

HEPA Filtration and Anti-Allergen Complete Seal
The cordless vacuum also performed very well in filtration. It has Sharkâs Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology and a HEPA filter, which keeps captured dust and debris inside the vacuum rather than letting it escape back into the room. It passed our fog evaluation perfectly, with no visible fog escaping from the vacuum.

How We Test Cordless Vacuums
Vacuum Wars purchases the products we review independently and does not accept paid sponsorships. We evaluate cordless vacuums using standardized studio tests conducted under consistent category conditions. These evaluations include debris pickup, carpet cleaning, suction, filtration, hair resistance, battery performance, usability, noise, and other ownership-related factors. Reveal Technology
Instead of the more typical LED lights on the floorhead, the PowerDetect Speed has what Shark calls Reveal Technology.
It uses blue light on the floorhead to reveal dirt and debris that might otherwise be hard to see. The flagship PowerDetect uses more conventional LED lighting, but we didn’t notice a big difference between the two systems.

Three PowerDetect Technologies
Shark’s Speed Clean & Empty retains three of the four PowerDetect features found on the flagship model.
Direction Detect adjusts suction depending on whether the vacuum is moving forward or backward. Dirt Detect increases power when the vacuum senses dirtier areas. FloorDetect changes suction and roller speed depending on the floor surface.
The only PowerDetect feature missing from the Speed is Edge Detect, which increases suction when cleaning near edges. However, the three technologies it does include help optimize both pickup performance and battery efficiency.
Owner Feedback and One-Star Review Percentage
We also look at the percentage of one-star Amazon reviews as one way to evaluate real-world reliability. The idea is to see how many owners had a poor enough experience with a product to leave the lowest possible rating. This can sometimes reveal longer-term problems that don’t appear during our relatively short evaluation period.
At the time of our Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty review, the cordless vacuum had a 9% one-star review rate. That’s lower than both the flagship PowerDetect (12%) and our 13.5% average. But there’s an important limitation here to consider.
Because the PowerDetect Speed is a newer product, it doesn’t have as many reviews yet. So we’ll have to see how that number holds up over time.

Cons of the Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty Cordless Vacuum
Most of the PowerDetect Speedâs biggest weaknesses appear to be connected to those larger front gates we mentioned earlier.
Floorhead Seal
Its unsealed suction (measured directly at the floorhead) was significantly below average, at just 0.08 kPa. For comparison, the flagship PowerDetect measured 0.29 kPa, and our current average is 0.58 kPa.
Those larger openings seem to help the floorhead take in extra-large debris without snowplowing, but they also reduce the floorhead’s overall seal.

We saw the consequences in our crevice pickup evaluation: the PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty scored a 2, compared with the 2.5 average and the flagship PowerDetectâs score of 3.
Shark normally addresses this issue with the DuoClean system. The soft roller at the front can pick up a wide range of debris while the floorhead still maintains a better seal. So although the PowerDetect Speed performed surprisingly well in general pickup evaluations, the lack of a DuoClean floorhead remains a meaningful drawback.

Smaller Dustbin
The PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty has a relatively small onboard dustbin. We measured its capacity at 500 milliliters, compared with 700 milliliters for the flagship and the current cordless vacuum average of 746 milliliters.
This is probably another trade-off of making the Speed lighter, but it means you may have to empty the onboard bin more often during longer cleaning sessions. The auto-empty dock helps once you return the vacuum to its base.

Hair Tangles
The PowerDetect Speed was just slightly below average in our 14-inch hair-tangle evaluation. It scored a 7 compared with the average of 7.4, and we found some minor tangling around the brushroll. The flagship PowerDetect scored a 10.
This wasn’t a major issue, but it was somewhat unusual. Shark cordless vacuums typically perform very well in our hair tangle assessments.

Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty Review: Is this Cordless Vacuum Worth It?
After adding up all of its scores, the PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty made our Top 10 Cordless Vacuums list, just a few positions below the flagship PowerDetect. It was also the second-best Shark cordless vacuum we’ve evaluated.
The biggest strengths are excellent general pickup performance, good raw power, and easy maneuverability. The lighter design makes it noticeably easier to handle than the flagship, while the auto-empty dock and MultiFLEX wand add useful convenience. The main compromise is the missing DuoClean floorhead.
Even so, it still performed extremely well in our standard pickup evaluations. However, the lower unsealed suction and weaker crevice performance show where the missing DuoClean floorhead makes a difference.

The Shark PowerDetect Speed AutoEmpty (IA3421) is a lightweight, maneuverable cordless vacuum with automatic dock emptying, three cleaning modes, MultiFLEX, HEPA filtration, Reveal lighting, and Direction, Dirt, and Floor Detect technologies. In Vacuum Wars testing, it earned perfect hard-floor and carpet pickup scores, 98% deep-clean performance, above-average airflow at the wand and floorhead, and above-average sealed suction. Low-power runtime reaches 60 minutes, though high-power runtime was under 12 minutes. Drawbacks include weak 0.08-kPa unsealed suction, below-average crevice performance, a small 500-mL bin, minor hair tangling, no DuoClean roller, and no Edge Detect feature. See additional info

Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty vs. PowerDetect Clean & Empty?
The PowerDetect Speed is an interesting alternative to the flagship PowerDetect (see our review), not just a cheaper version. The Speed is about a pound lighter overall and almost half a pound lighter at the handle. Yet it still produced perfect scores in our main hard floor and carpet pickup evaluations. It recorded higher sealed suction than the flagship.
In contrast, the flagship has the DuoClean floorhead, stronger unsealed suction, better crevice pickup, a larger dustbin, longer battery life, and better results in our hair tangle evaluation. That makes the decision largely dependent on which trade-offs matter most to you.
