Shark Introduces the PowerDetect Transformer, a 3-in-1 Upright Vacuum That Converts Into a Stick and Handheld

SharkNinja has announced the Shark PowerDetect Transformer, a new corded upright vacuum built around a three-in-one design. It is an unusual entry in the upright category because Shark has reworked the basic upright layout so the vacuum can operate as a full-size upright, a lighter stick-style cleaner, and a detachable handheld system.

The Shark PowerDetect Transformer (LX5002)is Shark’s most advanced upright, converting into upright, corded stick, and handheld modes with separate motors and dustbins. Pros include Floor, Edge, Dirt, and Direction Detect, Reveal LED lighting. Reveal only activates when lighting is insufficient. DuoClean rollers, excellent large-debris and pet-hair pickup, strong anti-hair-wrap performance, odor neutralization, sealed HEPA filtration, and versatile power settings. Testing was outstanding: perfect pickup scores on hard floors and carpets, 100% carpet deep-clean performance, a perfect crevice score, flawless fog-test filtration, and above-average usable suction and head airflow. However, stick mode is a notable compromise: its tiny dustbin fills quickly, airflow and suction were roughly one-third to over 50% lower, and deep-clean results averaged 97% versus 99% upright. The long handheld body is awkward with attachments, upright power trails earlier Shark flagships, and its $650 price is difficult to justify despite excellent overall performance and a number-four Vacuum Wars ranking. A New Take on the Upright Vacuum

Rather than relying on the traditional hose-and-wand configuration found on most upright vacuums, the PowerDetect Transformer features a modular design that allows the main powered unit to detach from the base and main dust cup.

According to Shark, the vacuum transforms easily between three corded configurations:

  • A full-size upright vacuum for whole-home floor cleaning
  • A lightweight stick vacuum for everyday cleaning and reaching under furniture
  • A handheld vacuum for stairs, upholstery, vehicles, ceilings, and other above-floor tasks

That matters because upright vacuums have always had a tradeoff. They often offer strong carpet-cleaning performance and larger dust capacity, but they are not always convenient for stairs, furniture, or low-clearance spaces. Stick and handheld vacuums solve some of those problems, but Shark’s pitch with the PowerDetect Transformer is that one corded system can cover many roles.

PowerDetect Technology Returns

The Transformer floorhead incorporates Shark’s existing PowerDetect technology, which automatically adjusts suction power and brushroll operation based on several conditions. According to the company, the vacuum can detect:

  • Floor type
  • Dirt levels
  • Edges
  • Corners
  • Cleaning direction

The floorhead also introduces Shark’s Reveal Technology, an integrated LED illumination system intended to make fine dust and debris more visible on hard floors.

Familiar Shark Cleaning Features

Many of Shark’s established technologies also appear on the Transformer floorhead. The feature set is very Shark: DuoClean, self-cleaning brushrolls, odor control, HEPA filtration, and PowerDetect automation have all appeared in recent Shark vacuums. So the Transformer is less about introducing one new cleaning technology and more about putting several familiar Shark ideas into a different physical format.

Similar DuoClean brushroll systems have performed very well in previous Vacuum Wars reviews of Shark uprights, including the Shark PowerDetect (see our review) and Shark Stratos (see our review) models, where they earned strong performance scores for debris pickup on both hard floors and carpets.

Accessories

The Shark PowerDetect Transformer ships with several accessories, including:

  • HairPro® Self-Cleaning Pet Power Brush
  • Pet Multi-Tool
  • Duster Crevice Tool
  • Anti-Allergen Dust Brush
  • MultiFlex Under Appliance Wand
  • Accessory storage bag
  • Three Odor Neutralizer cartridges

Availability

The Shark PowerDetect Transformer (model LX5002) is available in the Chimera colorway and is available through Shark and other major online retailers. The vacuum includes a five-year limited warranty.

Vacuum Wars has not yet independently tested the Shark PowerDetect Transformer. As always, manufacturer performance claims—including statements regarding cleaning performance and automated detection technologies—should be considered preliminary until verified through independent testing.
