Best spot cleaners of 2025 – Vacuum Wars testing results
We purchased nearly every top-selling portable carpet cleaner on the market and ran them through a series of all-new tests, including a completely redesigned stain removal test using a colorimeter. From entry-level budget picks to feature-packed cordless models, we wanted to find out which machine truly deserves the title of best spot cleaner.

In this guide, we’ll cover how each portable carpet cleaner works, the specific tests we performed, and reveal why we chose our top three overall as well as our picks for the best cordless spot cleaner and the best budget spot cleaner.
And not only do we think we found the best spot cleaner, we also believe that we found the best way to use these spot cleaners, which makes them way more effective than we had previously thought they could be.
How portable spot cleaners work
You put water mixed with the included solution into the clean water tank, then use a trigger on the handle to spray the mixture onto the stain, and then wait a minute to let the solution work and then scrub the stain as the machine sucks up the dirty water into the dirty water tank.

After cleaning, the dirty water tank should be emptied and, ideally, the hose should be flushed using the self-cleaning feature—if the model has one—before storage.

Spot cleaner performance & features scoring
Suction
Suction Power was measured in two places on each machine, often with both a digital and analog manometer. The Rug Doctor posted the highest suction, followed by the Kenmore corded and Kenmore cordless models.

The Bissell Little Green Mini Cordless had the lowest, well below the average of 51 inches of water lift—but cordless did not always mean weaker; both the Kenmore and Hoover cordless models landed in the top 10 for suction.

Hose Quality
We also measured hose length across all the models we tested. The longest we recorded was about 6.5 feet on the Kenmore cordless, while the shortest was just under 4 feet on the Dreame N10.

Beyond length alone, we also considered hose quality, scoring each model on how resistant the hose was to kinking when bent during use.

Hose management was another key factor in our rankings. This category assessed how well-designed each model’s storage system was for wrapping and securing the hose and handle.

We awarded extra points to designs that included a swivel on the handle, as this feature prevents the hose from twisting while scrubbing—a small but significant improvement in everyday usability.

Power Cords
Cord Length and Management were also evaluated. A well-designed cord management system, like on the Dirt Devil, makes it easier to store the machine neatly and prevent tangling. The ArmorAll model had the longest cord at just over 20 feet, while the Ailltopd had the shortest at under 9 feet.

Water Tanks
Water Tank Capacity and Features factored in as well. Some models use internal heaters to keep water warm. A few, such as the Bissell Hydrosteam and Starrybot, produce steam for stain removal and sanitation—though in our stain removal testing, this didn’t make much difference.

Why hose cleaning matters for portable carpet cleaners
Because of the nature of these machines—namely, you are using them to clean up nasty messes with a lot of bacteria—it’s really not enough to just empty and rinse out the dirty water tank afterwards. You also need to clean out the hose itself, ideally after each use. For example, look at this hose, which I forgot to clean out last time we used it over a year ago.

You can clean these hoses a few different ways. For example, you can simply suck up clean water with the hose afterwards, and that would work, but manufacturers often provide other ways. For example, sometimes they include little caps for the hose where you press the clean water trigger to rinse out the hose afterwards, but those caps can be easy to lose. So, some others provide a space on the machine itself where you insert the hose, and it acts like a cap.

Others have a button or lever on the handle which stops the water from coming out of the hose, and it does the same basic thing. We gave them just a few points if they had the included cap and a few more points if they had more advanced self-cleaning options.

Attachments and tools for stain removal
Some add wider brushes, tank-equipped tools for handling liquids like pet urine, or interchangeable bristle and rubber tip options. Rubber tips are easier to clean and more sanitary for certain messes.

Our new stain reduction test for spot cleaners
Each cleaner was used exactly as the manufacturer recommends, including their own solution in the specified mix.

We then sprayed the solution on the stain for exactly ten seconds, then waited five minutes before scrubbing the stain vigorously for one minute.
We measured the perceptual lightness of the stains before and after the tests using a colorimeter, making sure to wait until the stains were completely dry before measuring. The final stain scores were based on the percentage of the reduction of the lightness of the stain.

Top five stain reduction results
Shark StainStriker HairPro – 87.2%
Bissell Little Green Pro – 87.08%
Bissell HydroSteam – 86.85%
Bissell Mini Cordless – 86.6%
Original Shark StainStriker – 86.27%
The average stain reduction score across all spot cleaners we evaluated was 84.5%.

We think the Sharks and the Bissells did slightly better than the others here due to their cleaning solutions. For example, the Sharks have a separate tank just for Oxy, which is mixed with their other solution internally, and then it’s sprayed on the stain.

And the Bissells that we used with the Oxy Spot and Stain solution from Bissell tended to do better than the others. But for the most part, all these spot cleaners did about the same, with minimal differences, which, quite frankly, we were not all that impressed with. So be sure to see the bonus section at the end of this article, Best Way to Use a Spot Cleaner, where we talk about strategies to achieve much better, near-perfect results with these spot cleaners.

Considering long-term use & customer reviews
It’s not a perfect measure, but it adds useful perspective to our testing.
Best spot cleaners & portable carpet cleaners 2025 – winners
1. Shark StainStriker HairPro – 223 points
One of the best stain reduction scores, strong suction, comprehensive features and attachments, and excellent customer reviews.
2. Shark StainStriker – 216 points
Very close to first place, with similarly strong performance and features.
3. Bissell Little Green Pro – 215 points
The previous winner from 2024 remains a top choice with strong performance across categories.
Best Cordless Carpet Cleaner
For the best cordless model, we recommend the Bissell Little Green Mini Cordless. It actually ranked #4 overall with an impressive stain reduction score, strong reviews, a competitive price, and the convenience of being cordless.
Best Budget Portable Carpet Cleaner
For a budget option, the Uwant stood out. It was the lowest-priced model tested but still ranked #6 overall. While its stain reduction score was slightly above average, its strong customer reviews make it an appealing value pick.
Final thoughts on choosing a spot cleaner
The Shark StainStriker HairPro took the crown this year, but the competition was close, and we expect the field to keep evolving.

The best way to use a spot cleaner
In fact, we identified two simple techniques that dramatically improve how well any machine removes stains from carpet or upholstery.
1. Pre-Treat Tough Stains for Better Results
The first and most important thing to know is that you must pre-treat tough stains with something other than the mixture that comes out of your spot cleaner’s sprayer. The included shampoos and cleaning solutions that come with most of these machines simply aren’t strong enough to break down deeply set stains on their own.
Using a quality pre-treatment spray before cleaning can completely change your results. Spray the pre-treatment directly on the stain and let it sit for about five minutes before scrubbing it up with your spot cleaner. The difference between using one and skipping it is dramatic—almost night and day in some cases.

From our tests, oxy-based sprays performed the best overall. During the filming of this competition, we tested many pre-treatment sprays we found most effective for pre-treating stains to be the Resolve Ultra Pre-Treatment Spray (Amazon Link).
For example, consider the results of our dried-on grape juice test. The first test used the Shark Stain Striker HairPro—the winner of our competition—exactly as directed, with no pre-treatment. The second test used the same machine, but we pre-treated the stain with an oxy-based spray first. The third test repeated that process a second time. The improvement was clear each step of the way.

So in our opinion, investing in a good pre-treatment spray is the best way to achieve the kind of deep-clean results you probably expected when you bought your spot cleaner in the first place.
2. Act Quickly on Wet Stains and Spills
The second critical thing to know for best results is timing. If possible, catch a urine stain or spill while it’s still wet. Here’s what to do:
Scrub and extract: Use the spot cleaner to gently scrub the area and suction up the remaining liquid.
Use suction first: Don’t press the water trigger yet—just use your spot cleaner’s suction power to remove as much liquid as possible.
Apply your cleaner: Spray a pre-treatment solution or the included cleaning formula directly on the stain.
Let it sit: Wait about five minutes to give the solution time to break down the stain.
Use the spot cleaner: Then use your spot cleaner as directed by the manufacturer.
We tested this method using a particularly challenging example: coyote urine stains. In the first test, we let the stain dry completely before cleaning it with the Shark Stain Striker HairPro as directed. In the second, we used the spot cleaner to remove as much liquid as possible while the stain was still wet and then cleaned it, which yielded much better results. But the best outcome came from combining both methods—first extracting the liquid while the stain was fresh, then pre-treating the remaining area before cleaning again.

Final Thoughts
After all of our tests, the Shark Stain Striker HairPro stood out as the best spot cleaner overall. However, regardless of which machine you use, these two techniques—pre-treating stains and acting quickly on wet spills—make an enormous difference. Using a quality pre-treatment spray like the Resolve Ultra Pre-Treatment Spray (Amazon Link), especially for pet and urine stains, and suctioning up spills immediately before cleaning will leave you far more satisfied with your results.

We bought 15 of the most popular carpet spot cleaning machines and put them through all kinds of tests, focusing on their performance, features, and suitability for tackling pet urine stains and tough messes. In this article we’ll compare all the results as well as their specs and features and share our three top picks.
Spot Cleaner Basics
Before we begin, let’s briefly go over how these spot cleaners work. They all operate on a similar principle – you fill their clean water tanks with warm water and the provided cleaning solution. A trigger on the handle sprays the stain with the water solution mix. Next, you’ll scrub the area with the brush. The machine then sucks up the dirty water into its dirty water tank, removing pet waste left behind—and hopefully doing so very effectively.
A Note on Effective Pet Stain Removal

Before we go any further, we can’t not mention the importance of pre-treating pet stains before you use any spot cleaner on them, regardless of whether it’s the top-rated or lowest- rated product. While most commercial pre-treatment sprays fail to effectively remove these stains, we discovered that hydrogen peroxide (especially in higher concentrations like 6% or 12%) showed impressive results when used as a pre-treatment. We recommend gently agitating it with a brush and letting it sit for about 15 minutes before using your spot cleaner. And then…you need to do it again! That’s right, pre-treating should always be done twice to ensure the job is done right.

Always exercise caution and test a small, inconspicuous area of your carpet before applying hydrogen peroxide so you don’t risk bleach stains on your carpet.
It’s also helpful to remember that pre-treating with a hydrogen peroxide solution does not rid the carpet of the smell that the pet waste leaves behind. Instead, you’ll want to use chlorine dioxide tablets. We recommend CarpetMuscleTV’s video for more information about how to use these tablets.
Key Factors We Considered in Rating a Spot Cleaner for Carpet
We evaluated these spot cleaners based on various criteria to create an overall score.

Some of the factors we took into account include:
Suction Power: We measured suction power both at the hose and base. For this, the top performers were the Rug Doctor, Kenmore, and Bissell Little Green Pro.
Hose Quality and Length: A high-quality, kink-proof hose and a swiveling handle were factors we considered for maneuverability.
Cord Length: We considered cord length, with the average being 16 feet and 20 feet being the highest.
Tank Capacity: We measured tank capacity based on clean water, as a larger tank means less frequent refills.
Noise Level: Noise levels were noted to ensure a comfortable cleaning experience.
Weight: The overall weight of the spot cleaner affects ease of use.
Attachments and Features: Extra points were given for additional attachments and innovative features, like steam cleaning and internal water heating.
Price and Online Reviews: Of course, we considered list prices and online reviews, factoring in any consistent quality control issues.

Vacuum Wars Top Three Picks

After thorough testing, our top three spot cleaner picks for 2023 are:
Check out our honest review of the Hoover ONEPWR Emerge Pet+ Review next.
It’s worth noting, however, that both the Kenmore and the Shark are newcomers to the market and have not accumulated as many reviews as the well-established Bissell. This means it’s challenging to guarantee their long-term durability and potential quality control issues.
If you prioritize a product with a solid track record of positive reviews and want a machine that’s similar to our previous competition winner, we recommend considering the second-place overall winner, the Bissell Little Green Pro.
However, whatever you choose from these three best portable carpet cleaners, we think you’ll be quite pleased with the results!
