After a Century of Direct Sales, Kirby Expands Into Retail and E-Commerce

Kirby is making a significant change to the way consumers can buy its vacuum cleaners. The company, which has relied on a direct-selling model and in-home product demonstrations for more than a century, is expanding into traditional retail, e-commerce, and direct-to-consumer sales with a new line called the Kirby Signature Series.

The move does not replace Kirby’s longstanding network of independent Authorized Distributors. Instead, the company appears to be establishing two distinct sales channels: the new Signature Series for retail and online shoppers, and the Avalir Platinum S3 home cleaning system for consumers purchasing through Kirby’s traditional in-home demonstration model.

Kirby Introduces a New Signature Series

The Signature Series launches with three corded vacuum cleaners: the V530 upright, C530 canister with turbo nozzle, and C550 canister with a powered Multi-Surface Power Nozzle. Kirby says the new products were developed to compete with other premium vacuum brands sold through conventional retail and online channels.

That alone represents a notable departure for a company closely associated with in-home vacuum demonstrations.

According to Kirby, its direct-selling business dates back to 1920. Independent Authorized Distributors have traditionally demonstrated Kirby systems inside consumers’ homes, allowing prospective buyers to see the machines operate before deciding whether to purchase. Kirby continues to promote that model for the Avalir Platinum S3.

The Signature Series takes a different approach. Consumers can research and purchase the new vacuums without scheduling an in-home demonstration.

When Is Kirby Making the Change?

Vacuum Wars did not find a conventional press release establishing one specific public launch date, but several pieces of information point to a rollout taking place in September 2026.

Retailers were already being introduced to the new strategy earlier in the summer. The National Alliance of Trade Merchants said its members received an exclusive early look at the Signature Series during its July 20–23 Vendor Conference in Frisco, Texas. NATM described the presentation as taking place ahead of Kirby’s official retail launch and characterized it as Kirby expanding into retail and e-commerce.

Kirby also created an Ascend Program for dealers that began September 1, 2026. The program establishes purchasing requirements and incentives tied to Signature Series units.

Kirby is currently accepting orders for Signature Series vacuums on its own website, with product pages stating that preorders are expected to ship in late September. The company has also published a Minimum Advertised Price policy for its dealer, retailer, service center, and reseller network that takes effect September 21.

The retail rollout is already becoming visible outside Kirby’s website as well. Retailer Abt has listings for Signature Series models including the V530, C530, and C550, although current availability varies.

Together, those developments suggest that September 2026 marks the beginning of Kirby’s consumer-facing retail and e-commerce expansion.

Why Kirby Says It Is Expanding Into Retail

Kirby says changing consumer shopping behavior is behind the move.

“Consumers increasingly research products online, compare features and performance, reference product reviews, and expect greater flexibility in how and where they shop.”

Kirby says the Signature Series gives consumers new ways to discover and purchase its products through digital and retail channels.

That puts Kirby into a very different competitive environment. Rather than relying primarily on a salesperson demonstrating the product inside a home, the Signature Series will be presented alongside competing vacuum cleaners in stores, online product listings, reviews, comparison articles, and other conventional shopping channels.

For a company whose business model has been unusually distinct from the rest of the vacuum industry, that is a substantial change.

Kirby Is Keeping Its In-Home Demonstration Business

Kirby appears to have deliberately separated the new retail strategy from its traditional distributor business. The company says the Avalir Platinum S3 will continue to be sold through its network of independent Authorized Distributors and remain the product dedicated to in-home demonstrations. Consumers can still schedule a demonstration, where a distributor presents the system and its various cleaning functions.

The Signature Series therefore looks less like a replacement for Kirby’s historical business model and more like an additional product line designed for customers who would otherwise shop for a premium vacuum through a retailer or online. That distinction may be particularly important for Kirby’s existing distributor network, since the company is entering sales channels that operate very differently from the system its distributors have used for decades.

The Signature Series Also Changes Kirby’s Manufacturing Model

There is another notable difference between the two product lines.

Kirby’s current FAQ says the Signature Series was designed and engineered in the United States, while manufacturing and assembly take place in China. The Avalir Platinum S3, by comparison, continues to be manufactured at Kirby’s headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio.

That means the Signature Series represents more than a new group of vacuum cleaners. It also reflects changes in Kirby’s manufacturing strategy, distribution model, and relationship with conventional retailers.

Kirby says more than 25,000 engineering hours went into developing the Signature Series and that the company owns more than 200 tooling casts used for the products.

What the Change Could Mean for Kirby

The new strategy potentially exposes Kirby to a much larger group of consumers who may know the brand but would never schedule an in-home demonstration.

It also means Kirby’s products will increasingly be judged in the same environment as other premium vacuum brands: retailer shelves, online listings, customer reviews, independent testing, and direct specification and performance comparisons.

For Vacuum Wars, that makes the Signature Series particularly interesting. Kirby has long occupied an unusual position in the vacuum industry because of both its products and its method of selling them. The company’s decision to enter mainstream retail and e-commerce could make Kirby considerably more accessible to consumers while giving shoppers far more opportunities to compare its vacuums directly with competing models.
