Bissell CleanView 2254 vs Pet Hair Eraser 39883 Review: Which Upright Is Better?

We originally set out to review the Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet 2254, a popular and relatively affordable upright vacuum. But after buying one and putting it through our studio evaluations, we found that several of its basic cleaning results were quite good, while other weaknesses kept its overall showing below our expectations. So we decided to do a Bissell CleanView vs Pet Hair Eraser review instead. We’ll compare it to the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883 (a similar upright vacuum) and go over the pros and cons of using both.

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883

Vacuum Wars Stars 3.52

The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883 is a low-cost upright that impressed in testing with strong performance and value, featuring a tangle-free brush roll, squeegee to reduce scatter, and large front gates that improved large-debris pickup on hard floors and carpets compared to Shark Navigator models. In tests, it achieved solid pickup scores on both surfaces, handled everything from fine dust to large debris like cereal without snowplowing, and earned a perfect 100% deep-clean score by removing embedded sand from medium-pile carpet. Hair tests showed very good resistance to tangling with 7-inch strands and moderate performance with 14-inch hair. It also passed a sealed filtration fog test, offers responsive swivel steering, a Lift-Off detachable canister, quick-release wand, and above-average sealed suction. Included tools like a TurboEraser pet tool add versatility. Downsides include a slightly smaller dustbin and a somewhat awkward Lift-Off button and handle design. Overall, it delivers excellent all-around cleaning performance and strong value.

Vacuum Wars Stars 2.74

The Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet (2254L) offers affordable pricing, swivel steering, below-average weight, automatic cord rewind for convenient storage, and four attachments, including a suction-powered pet tool. Testing showed perfect carpet pickup, 98% embedded-sand removal, above-average crevice cleaning, and slightly above-average hard-floor pickup, although larger debris caused difficulties. Noise measured an average 82 decibels. It passed the 7-inch hair test but showed minor tangling with 14-inch hair. Drawbacks include manual height adjustment, no anti-tangle brushroll or detachable canister, and poor filtration, failing the fog test without sealed HEPA filtration. Sealed suction measured 68 inches; usable suction was 0.37 kPa. Both suction measurements and hose/head airflow were below average.

Bissell CleanView 2254 vs Pet Hair Eraser 39883: The Basics

The CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet 2254 uses an adjustable floorhead with multiple height settings to optimize suction and airflow for different surfaces. It’s a feature usually found on older vacuums since most newer models have moved away from it. It also adds another setting to remember when switching between floor types, so not our favorite feature.

Unlike the Pet Hair Eraser, the CleanView relies on an adjustable floorhead to adapt to different flooring types. © Vacuum Wars

The Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883 takes a different approach. Its floorhead isn’t height-adjustable. Instead, it uses three large front debris gates to help larger debris enter the floorhead, along with a rear squeegee designed to reduce scattering on hard floors.

CleanView 2254 includes four attachments. These include a crevice tool, extension wand, pet corner tool, and Bissell’s Turbo Eraser Pet Tool (a suction-powered brush tool that’s good for cleaning pet hair off of stairs and upholstery).

The Pet Hair Eraser 39883 includes a two-in-one dusting brush, crevice tool, and the same Turbo Eraser Pet Tool, which might perform better on this machine. But more on that later.

Pickup Performance: Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet 2254 vs Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883

Pickup performance was a strength for both upright vacuums. When evaluating the Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet 2254, we optimized the floorhead height setting for each assessment. That means if it performed better at a lower height setting, we scored it at that setting. If it performed better at a higher setting, we scored it at that setting instead.

This keeps the comparison fair against the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883, which doesn’t have an adjustable floorhead with multiple height settings. And in our carpet pickup evaluation, both earned perfect scores of 4 compared with a 3.1 average in our system. Each handled debris ranging from fine particles to extra-large debris without issues.

Carpet pickup results show the Bissell CleanView 2254 and Pet Hair Eraser 39883 both scoring 4. The upright vacuum average was 3.1.
Carpet pickup is another area where there’s little to separate these two vacuums. Both finished well above the category average. © Vacuum Wars

Hard floor pickup was more mixed. The Bissell CleanView 2254 scored 3, slightly above the 2.7 average. But it struggled somewhat with larger debris such as Froot Loops. In contrast, the Pet Hair Eraser scored 2.5 for hard floor pickup. That’s slightly below average, and it had more difficulty with medium and large debris.

Hard-floor pickup results show the Bissell CleanView 2254 scoring 3, the Pet Hair Eraser 39883 scoring 2.5, and the upright vacuum average at 2.7.
The CleanView did better here, but both models were more convincing on carpet than on bare floors. © Vacuum Wars

Carpet Deep Cleaning and Crevice Pickup

Both upright vacuums performed very well in our carpet deep clean evaluation, where we embed sand into medium-pile carpet and measure how much the vacuum removes after a set number of passes.

The Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet 2254 removed 98% of the embedded sand, while the Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883 achieved a perfect 100%. The current average is 97.5%.

For crevice pickup, the CleanView 2254 had the advantage. It scored 3.5, above the 3.2 average. The Pet Hair Eraser 39883 scored 2.5.

Carpet deep-clean results show the Bissell CleanView 2254 at 98%, the Pet Hair Eraser 39883 at 100%, and the average at 97.5%. Crevice pickup scores are 3.5 for the CleanView, 2.5 for the Pet Hair Eraser, and 3.2 on average.
Both vacuums did well with carpet deep cleaning, but the lower-priced CleanView came out ahead when debris was tucked into floor gaps. © Vacuum Wars

Power and Airflow

This is one area where the Pet Hair Eraser separated itself more clearly. The CleanView measured 68 inches for sealed suction, well below the 80.3-inch average. The Pet Hair Eraser measured 88 inches, putting it above average.

Usable suction at the floorhead was below average for both. The CleanView measured 0.37 kPa, while the Pet Hair Eraser measured 0.25 kPa compared with a 0.45 kPa average.

Sealed suction results show the Bissell CleanView 2254 at 68 inches and the Pet Hair Eraser 39883 at 88 inches, compared with an 80.3-inch average. Usable suction measures 0.37 kPa for the CleanView, 0.25 kPa for the Pet Hair Eraser, and 0.45 kPa on average.
Despite much lower sealed suction, the CleanView delivered more suction through the open floorhead—a result that may help explain its stronger crevice and hard-floor pickup. © Vacuum Wars

The Pet Hair Eraser also had stronger airflow at the hose. It measured 67 CFM compared with 60 CFM for the CleanView. At the floorhead, it measured 50 CFM compared with 39 CFM for the CleanView. Both were below the current averages of 77 CFM at the hose and 61 CFM at the head.

So the power results were mixed rather than giving either vacuum a clean sweep. The Pet Hair Eraser had stronger sealed suction and clearly stronger airflow, while the CleanView produced more usable suction at the open floorhead and did well in some of our practical pickup tests. The Pet Hair Eraser’s stronger airflow may also benefit the suction-powered Turbo Eraser Pet Tool, since that attachment depends on airflow to drive its brush.

Hose airflow results show the Bissell CleanView 2254 at 60 CFM and the Pet Hair Eraser 39883 at 67 CFM, versus a 77 CFM average. Head airflow measures 39 CFM for the CleanView, 50 CFM for the Pet Hair Eraser, and 61 CFM on average.
Airflow gives the 39883 another performance edge, even though both models remained below average in our measurements. © Vacuum Wars

Filtration Performance

This was the biggest weakness we found with the Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet 2254. The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883 uses a sealed HEPA filtration system, and it passed our fog evaluation with no visible fog escaping from the vacuum. The CleanView doesn’t use a sealed HEPA system, and it allowed a substantial amount of fog to escape during our fog assessment.

We consider sealed filtration especially important for people with allergies or anyone who wants the dust they vacuum up to stay inside the machine rather than being blown back into the room. We have a separate guide explaining HEPA filtration standards and what they mean for vacuum cleaners. On filtration alone, the Pet Hair Eraser is the clear winner.

The sealed HEPA system gives the Pet Hair Eraser a meaningful advantage if you want captured dust to stay inside the vacuum. © Vacuum Wars

Hair Tangle Performance

The Pet Hair Eraser has an anti-tangle brush roll, while the CleanView doesn’t. Even so, their results in our hair-tangle evaluations were similar.

Both passed our 7-inch hair assessment but showed minor tangling with 14-inch hair. If long hair is common in your home, you may still need some manual brush-roll maintenance with either model. You can also see how these results compare with our current picks for the best upright vacuums for pet hair.

The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883 has a more specialized brush design, but that didn’t create a major advantage in our hair-tangle evaluations. © Vacuum Wars

Ergonomics, Weight, and Noise

Both uprights have swivel steering and were relatively easy to maneuver in tighter spaces. The CleanView weighed 14.9 pounds, while the Pet Hair Eraser weighed 14.4 pounds. They are both lighter than the 15.3-pound average in our dataset.

It’s also nice to see that they’re not too loud. Noise was identical at 82 dB for both vacuums, which is also the current average for upright vacuums. The CleanView has one convenience feature the Pet Hair Eraser doesn’t: automatic cord rewind. This lets you press a button to retract the cord into the vacuum when you’re done cleaning.

Lift-Off Versatility

The Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883 has another key advantage over the CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet 2254. It has Lift-Off functionality.

That means you can detach the canister from the floorhead, making it easier to clean stairs, furniture, and other above-floor areas. The CleanView doesn’t have a comparable detachable-canister design, so the Pet Hair Eraser is the more versatile option for homes where above-floor cleaning matters.

Price and Value

Both models are relatively affordable uprights, but their prices can move around enough that we wouldn’t choose between them based on a small price difference alone. The more important distinction is what the Pet Hair Eraser adds for the money, including its sealed HEPA filtration, stronger sealed suction and airflow, Lift-Off versatility, and an anti-tangle brush design.

Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind Pet 2254 vs Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883: Which Should You Buy?

After adding up the scores, the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Allergen Lift-Off 39883 earned a place on our Top 10 Upright Vacuums list. The CleanView didn’t, though our rankings can change over time.

If you value the CleanView’s extra attachment, automatic cord rewind, and strong results in several of our basic cleaning tests, and you don’t mind manually adjusting the floorhead height, it can still be a good value. But if you want sealed filtration, stronger sealed suction and airflow, and greater above-floor versatility, the Pet Hair Eraser is the better option.

Taken as a whole, the Pet Hair Eraser is the better machine. The CleanView is a capable cleaner for the money, but the 39883 combines competitive pickup with much better filtration, stronger airflow, and Lift-Off versatility. We also compared the Pet Hair Eraser 39883 directly with the Shark Navigator if you want another useful reference point among similarly priced uprights.
