The Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802 is one of the higher-end models in Shark’s upright lineup, so we bought one and put it through weeks of evaluations to see if it’s actually good. We found that it includes nearly every major feature Shark offers on its flagship uprights, with just one exception. That missing feature is the only reason this Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV upright vacuum isn’t at the very top of our rankings. In our complete Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802 review, you’ll see the pros, cons, and the missing feature we wish it had.

Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802
Vacuum Wars Stars 4.57
The Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802 combines a DuoClean floorhead with Floor, Edge, Direction, and Dirt Detect sensors, plus HEPA filtration, Anti-Allergen Complete Seal, active anti-hair-wrap technology, LED headlights, odor neutralization, swivel steering, and Lift-Away versatility. In testing, it earned perfect debris pickup scores on hard floors and carpet, a 100% carpet deep-clean score, 85 inches of sealed suction, 67 CFM of airflow at the head, a perfect fog-test result, and a 79-decibel noise reading. At 14.3 pounds, it is lighter than average and easy to maneuver. Downsides include the lack of Powered Lift-Away, a small 0.76-liter dustbin, a shorter-than-average 25-foot cord, and no motorized attachment, though the included crevice tool, dusting brush, and pet multi-tool add versatility around homes.
At Vacuum Wars, we purchase every upright vacuum ourselves and conduct our reviews without sponsorships or brand influence—making our results some of the most trusted and unbiased in the industry.
Hard Floor and Carpet Pickup
The floorhead is one of the biggest reasons we like this Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV upright vacuum. Shark’s DuoClean design pairs a soft roller at the front with a more traditional brushroll behind it. In our experience, this combination works especially well in homes where you’re moving between hard floors and carpet.
The soft roller does a great job of collecting debris from hard floors, including the finer material that can be easy to leave behind. The second roller gives it the agitation it needs for carpet cleaning. And with the LA802’s automatic floor detection feature, you can move between surfaces without stopping to change the brushroll setting.

That versatility showed up in our surface pickup evaluations. The LA802 picked up every size of debris we used on both hard floors and carpet, earning a 4 out of 4 on each surface. For context, the average upright vacuum in our dataset was 2.7 on hard floors and 3.1 on carpet.
Carpet Deep Cleaning Performance
The Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802 also delivered excellent results in our carpet deep cleaning assessment. For this evaluation, we embed sand into medium-pile carpet and weigh the dustbin before and after cleaning to measure how much it removes.
It collected 100% of the embedded sand compared with the 97.5% average. That was marginally better than the Shark flagships we’ve evaluated. The difference was small enough to fall within the assessment’s margin of error. So while it shows excellent deep cleaning, we wouldn’t treat it as a decisive advantage over the other models.

Detect Features
There are four Detect features included with the Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802 that adjust its cleaning behavior as you vacuum. They reduce manual adjustments during everyday cleaning.
Floor Detect
Identifies the floor type and automatically adjusts suction and brushroll speed. Shark describes it as an ultrasonic sensor, and we like the convenience. Shark uprights have offered different settings for hard floors and carpet for many years, but this Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV upright vacuum handles the change for you.
Edge Detect
Increases suction when the floorhead is close to an edge or wall. Its edge cleaning was more impressive than we expected during evaluations, making this one of the automatic features we appreciated most.
Direction Detect
Adjusts airflow through the floorhead based on whether you are pushing forward or pulling backward. This helps you pick up debris more effectively in both directions.
Dirt Detect
Senses dirtier areas and boosts suction to help clean them. We find this feature more useful on cordless vacuums, where power management also affects battery life. But automatic adjustments are a welcome convenience on a corded upright vacuum.

Suction and Airflow
Power measurements were good on the Shark Detect Pro LA802, with above-average results in two key areas. We measured 85 inches of sealed suction compared with an 80.3-inch average, and 67 CFM of airflow at the head compared with an average of 61 CFM. Head airflow is the metric most relevant for hard floor pickup.
Its other power metrics were closer to average, but this vacuum’s real benefit isn’t raw power numbers. Usability is where the Detect Pro really separates itself from Shark flagships.

Filtration and Hair Tangle Prevention
The Shark Detect Pro LA802 combines Shark’s Anti-Allergen Complete Seal system with a HEPA filter. Shark claims it traps 99.99% of dust and allergens down to 0.3 microns, and it passed our fog evaluation with flying colors. In that assessment, we check for visible leakage from the vacuum’s filtration system. We consider sealed filtration an important feature on a premium upright, and the LA802 performed well.

We also like Shark’s approach to hair management. The LA802 has one of the best anti-hair tangle systems in the business, which is no surprise, since Shark pioneered active hair removal technology. A built-in comb actively clears hair from the brushroll and directs it toward the dustbin as you vacuum. If you’ve spent time cutting hair off an older upright’s brushroll, this is a useful upgrade.

Weight and Other Usability Features
One of the LA802’s biggest advantages over Shark flagship uprights is its weight. We measured it at 14.3 pounds, below the 15.3-pound comparison average and noticeably lighter than the 17.2-pound Shark Stratos AZ3002.
We also found the floorhead’s swivel responsive, the weight distribution good, and the handle design well thought out. Together, those details make the LA802 pleasant to maneuver.

The wand and handle detach from the canister with the push of a button, allowing you to pick up larger debris directly or reach higher areas. Standard Lift-Away also lets you remove and carry the canister for jobs like stairs and upholstery, so you don’t have to move the entire upright for every task. We really felt the difference that the weight reduction makes here.
In addition, the floorhead has LED lights to help reveal debris, and an odor neutralizer cartridge releases a scent through the airflow. We measured its noise level at 79 dB, slightly quieter than the 82 dB average.

Cons of the Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802
Our Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802 review won’t be complete without discussing the cons, even though there really isn’t much to nitpick here because it gets a lot right. Its main trade-offs come from the features Shark left out to keep it more compact and easier to handle.
No Powered Lift-Away
This is the missing feature we teased earlier. Lift-Away and Powered Lift-Away are not the same. With Powered Lift-Away models such as the Shark Stratos and PowerDetect uprights, the floorhead’s brushroll remains powered when you detach the canister. That essentially turns the vacuum into a stick vacuum, which is useful for getting under furniture or into tight spaces.
The LA802 doesn’t have that capability. The floor nozzle is unpowered once you lift the canister away, so you’re limited to using it like a hose and handheld combo with the included attachments. It’s ultimately not a huge deal. But it’s the one feature that would have pushed this vacuum to the number one spot in our rankings if Shark had included it.

Smaller Dustbin
The LA802 has a 0.76-liter dustbin compared with 1.6 liters on the Shark Stratos AZ3002 and a 2.6-liter average. It’s a trade-off to keep in mind if you regularly collect a lot of debris. It gets the job done, but you may need to empty it more often than the other Shark upright vacuums with larger bins.

Shorter Power Cord
Its 25-foot cord is shorter than the 30-foot comparison average and the 30-foot cords on the other Shark flagships we’ve compared.
This is a manageable limitation, but it can mean more outlet changes when cleaning larger areas.
No Included Motorized Tool
The Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802 comes with a crevice tool, a dusting brush, and a pet multi-tool. We found the attachments well constructed and generally useful. However, it doesn’t include a motorized power brush, which the Stratos and PowerDetect packages we compared do.
The good news is it’s a Lift-Away. So it’s already very good at above-floor cleaning jobs, even without a motorized tool. Still, it would have been nice to have a motorized power brush.
Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802 Review: Should You Buy It?
We came away impressed with the Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802. Its real-world floor cleaning results were excellent. It combines the DuoClean head, four Detect features, sealed HEPA filtration, and active hair removal with a lighter, easy-to-handle design. So overall, it’s a solid choice.
The decision largely comes down to which conveniences matter most in your home. If you want easier handling while keeping strong hard floor and carpet cleaning, the LA802 might be the right upright vacuum. If you often clean under low furniture or prefer a larger bin, longer cord, and motorized attachment, you may want to check out Shark flagships.
After we added up all the scores, the Shark Detect Pro Lift-Away ADV LA802 is number three on our upright vacuum top 10 list, which we update weekly.
We buy every upright vacuum we evaluate, and our reviews are never sponsored.
