Shark PowerDetect Ultra-Light HZ4002 Overview
The HZ4002 is a Shark corded stick vacuum designed for both hard floors and carpets. Shark lists the complete vacuum at 9.3 pounds and equips it with a 30-foot cord, so it’s relatively easy to carry while avoiding runtime and battery-replacement concerns that come with cordless models.
Its primary floor head is Shark’s DuoClean Detect nozzle. A soft roller at the front handles fine dust and larger debris on hard floors, while a conventional brushroll behind it works across carpets and rugs. Both rollers remain in place as the vacuum moves from one floor type to another, eliminating the need to swap floor heads.
The Shark ultra-light corded stick vacuum also converts into a handheld vacuum for stairs, furniture, shelves, and other above-floor cleaning. Accessories include an 8-inch crevice tool, upholstery tool, onboard storage clip, and pet power brush. It also includes self-standing storage, LED headlights, Odor Neutralizer Technology, and a five-year limited warranty.
Hard Floor and Carpet Pickup Performance
Everyday debris pickup was one of the HZ4002’s strongest strengths. It earned a perfect score of 5 in our hard floor and carpet pickup evaluations compared with averages of 3.5 and 3.9. The Stratos HZ3002 also earned a 5 in both assessments.
The Shark ultra-light corded stick vacuum’s DuoClean design is a major reason for that versatility. Soft rollers are especially effective at picking up large and fine debris off hard floors, but the HZ4002 works just as well on carpets. It didn’t lose effectiveness on carpet and handled debris without requiring a head change or a separate cleaning pass with another tool throughout evaluations.
That means the ultra-light HZ4002 is well suited for rooms that transition between hard flooring, area rugs, and wall-to-wall carpet. Its results suggest the corded format doesn’t come at the expense of the easy, multi-surface operation people expect from a modern stick vacuum.
Airflow, Suction, and Crevice Pickup
The PowerDetect produced 58 CFM of airflow at the wand, which is higher than both the Stratos’ 54 CFM and the average of 42 CFM. Strong wand airflow helps attachments move debris through the hose and into the bin when you convert the vacuum for above-floor cleaning.
This corded stick vacuum also performed well with unsealed suction and crevice pickup. Its unsealed suction measured 0.63 kPa compared with 0.45 kPa for the Stratos and a 0.58 kPa average. Its crevice pickup score was 3.5, ahead of the HZ3002’s 3 and the 2.5 average. Together with its perfect hard floor pickup result, these numbers point to strong practical cleaning around floor seams, edges, and other narrow gaps.
As for sealed suction, the result needs a little more context. The PowerDetect HZ4002 measured 60 inches in our sealed suction evaluation, which was better than the Stratos’ 53 inches but below the 73-inch comparison average. However, that lower result didn’t prevent the corded stick vacuum from delivering excellent surface pickup, above-average wand airflow, or strong crevice performance. So we wouldn’t treat it as a major weakness on its own.
Carpet Deep Clean
For our carpet deep clean evaluation, we embed sand in medium-pile carpet and measure how much the vacuum recovers after a fixed number of passes on maximum power. The PowerDetect ultra-light HZ4002 earned a score of 92. That’s almost identical to the comparison average of 93, although the older Stratos performed better at 96.
The HZ4002 was excellent at collecting visible debris from the top of carpets, but it wasn’t unusually strong at extracting deeply embedded material. Still, we consider its deep clean result strong and typical rather than poor.
If you have a mixed-floor home, you’ll likely benefit from the HZ4002’s versatility. If you have extensive carpeting and a heavy emphasis on deep extraction, you may prefer a full-size upright.
Hair-Tangle and Pet Hair Pickup
The Shark PowerDetect ultra-light HZ4002 earned a perfect score of 10 in our 14-inch hair-tangle evaluation, well above the supplied average of 7.4. This assessment evaluates how effectively the floor head resists hair wrapping around its brushroll during normal vacuuming.
While no anti-tangle system eliminates every maintenance task, the HZ4002’s results suggest routine brushroll cleanup should be minimal. Shark also includes a motorized pet power brush for stairs and upholstery, where a full-size floor head is impractical.
Sealed HEPA Filtration
Filtration was another major advantage. The HZ4002 passed our fog evaluation with no visible leaks. Its filtration system kept fine particles contained rather than letting them escape through gaps in the body.
Shark pairs a HEPA filter with its Anti-Allergen Complete Seal system. The company says the corded stick vacuum captures and traps 99.99% of dust and allergens down to 0.3 microns, based on their stated evaluation standard.
Handling and Convenience Features
We measured the handle weight at 1,300 grams compared to the average of 1,512 grams for corded stick vacuums in our database. The Stratos was almost identical at 1,292 grams.
That reduced handle weight comes from the Shark PowerDetect ultra-light HZ4002 having no battery attached to its handle. The difference is most noticeable when using the vacuum with an attachment above the floor, such as on stairs, upholstery, shelves, or vehicle interiors.
We measured the dustbin at 823 mL, which is larger than the Stratos’s 750 mL capacity and the 746 mL comparison average. A larger bin doesn’t change cleaning performance, but it can reduce interruptions during a longer cleaning session.
The self-standing design is also very useful. Many stick vacuums have to be leaned against furniture, placed on the floor, or returned to a dock whenever you pause. The PowerDetect HZ4002 can remain upright on its own, making short breaks and storage easier. Its slim floor head and steering also helped it maneuver in tighter spaces.
The 30-foot cord is both an advantage and a tradeoff. It provides continuous power and a generous cleaning radius, but you still need to plug the vacuum in and manage the cord as you move between rooms. Some owner feedback we reviewed described the cord as stiff or the vacuum as harder to push, while other owners reported the opposite experience. We would treat that as a preference-sensitive concern rather than a universal flaw.
PowerDetect Intelli-Sense Sensors
According to Shark, the PowerDetect Intelli-Sense system can recognize floor type, adjust brushroll speed, and direct cleaning power for forward or reverse movement. These automatic responses help the DuoClean nozzle adapt as it moves between surfaces and changes direction.
While we see the Intelli-Sense system as a nice-to-have convenience, it’s less essential on a corded stick vacuum. Automatic power adjustments on a cordless model can extend battery life by reserving maximum power for the moments when it’s needed most. But the HZ4002 has continuous power from the wall, so there’s no battery runtime to preserve.
There’s no doubt that the sensors do make operation more automatic. It just shouldn’t be the primary reason to choose this model.

The newer PowerDetect HZ4002 had the advantage in several evaluations. It produces more wand airflow, has higher unsealed suction, a better crevice pickup score, and a larger dustbin. Both models earned perfect scores in our hard floor and carpet pickup assessments, and their measured handle weights were essentially the same.
The Stratos HZ3002 does have an advantage in carpet deep cleaning, scoring 96 compared with 92 for the HZ4002. And the HZ4002’s sealed suction result was still below the overall average, even though it improved on the HZ3002’s result.
For most mixed-floor homes, the PowerDetect ultra-light HZ4002’s stronger airflow, crevice performance, updated DuoClean Detect head, and larger bin make it the more complete everyday package. The Stratos’s higher deep clean score remains worth considering if you’re primarily focused on embedded carpet debris.
Shark PowerDetect Ultra-Light HZ4002 Review: Is It Worth Buying?
The ultra-light HZ4002 corded stick vacuum is a strong choice if you want a stick vacuum’s light, maneuverable feel but prefer continuous corded power. Its best qualities are also the ones you’ll notice most often, including excellent pickup across hard floor types, strong airflow, effective crevice cleaning, excellent hair resistance, sealed filtration, a light handle, and a generously sized bin.
Its limitations are relatively modest. Carpet deep clean performance was average rather than exceptional, sealed suction fell below the comparison average, and some people will never enjoy managing a cord. The Detect features are convenient but less consequential on a machine that doesn’t need to conserve a battery.
All in all, if a cord isn’t a dealbreaker, the Shark PowerDetect ultra-light HZ4002 offers a great mix of cordless-style handling and corded consistency.
