The Yeedi S14 Plus
Yeedi is a subsidiary of Ecovacs (one of the biggest robot vacuum manufacturers), and the Yeedi brand seems to be a more budget-friendly alternative. But this is the first time we’ve seen an almost 1-for-1 copy between an Ecovacs and Yeedi model, particularly with the Ecovacs X8.
We reviewed the Ecovacs X8 Omni recently, and it’s almost identical in features and looks to the S14 Plus. However, the X8 Omni is a little more expensive and has internal differences that we’ll touch on later.
In this Yeedi S14 Plus review, we’ll also compare specs and features to the Roborock Saros 10 because it’s a more expensive flagship from another brand with similar features. That way, you’ll have an excellent idea of the Yeedi S14 Plus’s value.
Yeedi S14 Plus Review: Evaluation and Performance
Vacuuming Performance
The Yeedi S14 Plus had a fairly powerful suction motor. In our evaluation on max power, it scored1.80kpa, which is significantly above the average score of 0.83kpa, and much more suction than the Roborock Saros 10, which scored 0.33kpa.
It uses a standard anti-tangle main brush in a floating housing and a single side brush to sweep debris from hard floors and carpets.
It was really good at picking up debris, though we noticed a bit of debris scattering with its side brush. This was especially evident when large amounts of debris were on hard floors.
We noticed the same thing with the Ecovacs X8, which isn’t surprising since they are essentially the same in this regard. It wasn’t a significant problem, but it’s still worth noting.
Also, the Yeedi S14 Plus has an automatically extending side brush, which is now a standard for flagships. It can sense when it’s near corners and extend for better coverage, and it did well with this in our evaluations.
Pet Hair
The S14 Plus had some amazing scores in our pet hair evaluations.
In the 2.5-inch pet hair pickup evaluation on carpet, it cleared 97% of the hair. This is difficult for many combo robot vacuums; the average scores we have gathered for these is 81%. The S14 Plus however had one of the best scores on record with this evaluation— on par with the Ecovacs X8 and higher than the Saros 10, which scored a still-impressive 86%.
It also did quite well with resisting hair tangles, leaving no hair tangles on the brushroll in our tests. This matches the performance of the X8 and Saros 10, both of which also have active hair removal features. These are little plastic combs in the housing that remove hair from the brush as it vacuums. The average score in our evaluations for this test is 38% remaining hair tangles.
Carpet Deep Clean
With the carpet deep clean evaluation, where we see how well the vacuum is at picking up deeply embedded sand in carpets, the S14 Plus performed a bit lower than average, matching the performance of the Saros 10 with a score of 71.
Mopping
Another huge advantage of the Yeedi S14 Plus is its mopping ability. It uses a roller-style mop, which is different from the more common dual spinning pad mops or single vibrating pads.
The main difference is that robot vacuums with roller mops spray water on the roller as they mop and squeegee excess water into an onboard water tank.
That means roller-style mops can handle wet liquids much better than spinning or single mops. These tend to spread wet liquid because they have nowhere to put the excess water.
Roller-style mops also tend to be better at resisting streaks since they usually leave behind less water than the others. In our dried-on stain mopping evaluation, the Yeedi was much better than the Roborock Saros 10’s score of 57 as well as the Ecovacs X8 score of 72. The Yeedi scored 94 points, which is also a touch above the average score of 92.5.
But it also left behind a lot less water, only .40g, which is significantly less than the .92g average.
As a result, the Yeedi S14+’s combined mopping stain assessment scores were much higher than average—and interestingly, higher than both the Evovacs X8 and the Roborock Saros 10.
There are lots of advanced mopping features on this robot vacuum as well. For example, its roller module extends automatically when it’s near the edges for better edge coverage. And, as far as we can tell, it’s as good or better than the automatically extending mop pads that spinning robots use.
The mop roller also automatically lifts 10mm when it senses carpets to keep them dry. This is great if your home has a mixture of carpets and hard floors because you can vacuum them on the same run.
Multi-functional Dock
As far as we can tell, the Yeedi S14 Plus dock is identical to the dock on the Ecovacs X8, except the S14 Plus doesn’t have a detergent-filling feature, whereas the X8 does. However, it seems to have everything else you would want in a hands-free robot vacuum management system.
When the S14 Plus returns to its dock, it will:
- Empty its bin into a disposable bag,
- Wash its roller with hot water,
- Dry its roller with hot air,
- Refill the clean water tank,
- And empty its onboard dirty water tank into the dirty water tank on the base.
The dock is a self-cleaning station, which is a feature usually reserved for higher-end robot vacuums like this one.
Obstacle Avoidance
Another positive was its obstacle avoidance. It has top-of-the-line sensors like a camera and 3D structured light, as well as an LED light. So it can see objects in the dark.
In our various obstacle avoidance evaluations, the Yeedi scored 19 out of a possible 24, which is higher than the average score of 16.6. But this is one area where the Roborock Saros 10 did slightly better with its score of 20. Interestingly, the Yeedi S14 Plus did better than the Ecovacs X8 Omni here, despite them appearing to have the same external obstacle avoidance hardware.
App
The Yeedi S14 Plus has all the major features we’re used to seeing on top-of-the-line apps like multi-level mapping, virtual barriers, advanced room-by-room scheduling, and live progress monitoring. You can control nearly all the features of the robot vacuum and its bin behaviors in detailed ways.
This robot vacuum has no built-in virtual voice assistant or real-time pet monitoring features like its twin, the Ecovacs X8 Omni. However, you can control it with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
Something also worth noting is that the App Store scores for the Yeedi are much better on Apple than on Google Play, and we did all evaluations with the Apple app.
Cons of Yeedi S14 Plus
Our Yeedi S14 Plus review won’t be complete without discussing potential drawbacks. So let’s dive in.
Battery Life
Battery is another area where the Ecovacs X8 and the Yeedi S14+ differ. The S14 Plus has a smaller battery than the X8, and it showed in our evaluations. The Yeedi was slightly below average in battery efficiency:
Yeedi S14+ | Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni | Roborock Saros S10 | Average Robot Vacuum |
.94 minute per % | 1.41 minute per % | 1.63 minute per % | 1.31 minute per % |
The Yeedi also demonstrated a square-feet-per-charge estimate at 728 square feet, which is lower than the 1015 square feet average.
That noted, the Yeedi does have a recharge and resume feature. That means it will return to recharge and resume exactly where it left off on the map if the battery runs out. So the smaller battery isn’t a big deal.
Navigation
Its navigation was also not quite as good as the Ecovacs X8. It covered the area well and fairly efficiently. In fact, it was right at the 0.72 m per minute mark, which is right in line with the average 0.070 m and the Roborock Saros 10 0.76m.
However, it got stuck between some chair legs in our second run, which most robot vacuums don’t do. Also, its twin, the X8, was generally better at navigation. We can’t figure out exactly why that is yet.
It could be that a cheaper processor was used in the Yeedi S14 Plus. But we can only confirm the processor of the Ecovacs X8. Interestingly, the S14 and the X8 use an internal lidar instead of the top-mounted lidar most robot vacuums use. This is supposed to make the vacuum slimmer, so it can get under more furniture.
However, we found that the 3.98 inches isn’t much slimmer than robot vacuums with top-mounted lidars. It’s above the average height of 3.78 inches compared to all the vacuums we’ve ever evaluated.
So it seems Yeedi should have gone with a top-mounted lidar, which would’ve meant better navigation numbers, because the internal lidar certainly didn’t make it slimmer.
Internal Dustbin
Another potential drawback is the robot vacuum’s internal dustbin. It holds 220 milliliters, the same as the X8, which is much smaller than average, which is 410ml. However, you can program it in the app to return to its dock several times to empty the dustbin if needed. Even so, the small bin could be an issue if you have a lot of pet hair.
Yeedi S14 Plus Review: Conclusion and Recommendation
When we add up all the scores, the Yeedi S14 Plus still managed to rank in the Top 20 and is currently high on our Best Robot Vacuums list, updated weekly. Overall, the Yeedi S14 Plus has top-of-the-line features, great mopping, good obstacle avoidance, and a discounted price compared to the Ecovacs X8.
The battery life and navigation were probably how Yeedi got to that cheaper price, but neither was a dealbreaker. This robot vacuum is a good pick for just about any home.
