Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni: Key features and basic specs
The X8 Pro Omni is a robot vacuum and mop combo. That means it can vacuum hard floors and carpets and mop floors simultaneously using its lifting roller mop. It also has a fully featured auto-empty bin/mop-washing station, as well as front-mounted obstacle avoidance sensors. While it’s Ecovacs’ new flagship, it’s being sold at about 20% less than many of its competitors.
We consider its closest competitor to be the Roborock Qrevo Edge in terms of price and specs, so we’ll compare the X8 to the Edge a lot in this review.
Pros of the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni
New hardware features
The X8 has a lot of new hardware features that were an advantage. For example, it has a newly designed main brush, which Ecovacs calls ZeroTangle 2.0. It uses comb-like structures in the housing to resist hair tangles.
And it does this quite well. For example, it got a perfect score of 0% hair tangles on our 7-inch hair tangle evaluation, which is rare.
It’s also a well-designed brush in general. In our embedded 2.5-inch pet hair pickup evaluation, it picked up 97% of the hair, which is a top 10 score. That’s way higher than the average and higher than the Roborock Edge.
If you’re looking for a top-tier robot vacuum and mop combo that delivers serious cleaning power, advanced navigation, and a highly efficient docking station—all at around 20% less than many direct competitors—the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni is definitely worth considering.
Exceptional suction power
The X8 Pro has a ton of power. In our suction evaluation on max power, it scored higher than average. In fact, it had a top 10 score out of the over 100 robot vacuums we’ve evaluated this way. And it was a similar story with its airflow on max power. Both of those numbers were significantly higher than the Roborock Qrevo Edge.
X8 Pro | Qrevo Edge | Average robot tested | |
Suction (Max Power)* | 2.30kpa | .45kpa | .80kpa |
Airflow (Max Power)* | 24cfm | 15cfm | 16cfm |
In our carpet deep clean evaluation, where we see how good the vacuum is at picking up deeply embedded sand in carpet, the X8 Pro Omni was above average. It picked up 79% of the embedded sand.
Sweeping Ability
Its sweeping ability on hard floors was good, too. However, its side brush was a little aggressive, in our opinion. It tends to scatter debris when there is a large amount of debris, so we knocked off some points for this. However, for normal amounts of debris on hard floors and especially on carpets, it was a good sweeper.
Advanced mopping capabilities
Another big pro was its mopping features. The X8 Pro Omni is the first Ecovacs robot with the OZMO roller instead of the more typical spinning mop pads. This roller-style mop has a few advantages over dual spinning pads, such as the ability to pick up wet spills like urine or other liquids.
The X8 can actually process wet liquid with a squeegee and store it in an internal dirty water tank, which is then automatically emptied into the dock’s dirty water tank after each run.
The roller mop is also good at reducing streaks because it leaves behind very little water compared to others. And in our evaluations, it had one of the lowest amounts of water left behind.
Its roller has some additional important features:
- Lifts 10mm automatically when it senses carpets. That means it can vacuum and mop homes with a mix of hard floors and carpets in the same run.
- Extends when it’s doing edge runs for good edge coverage, which is pretty impressive. This feature can be turned on or off in the app.
Also worth noting is that it has the same auto-extending feature on its side brush for better corner coverage. Both auto-extending features worked very well in our hands-on assessments.
Dried-on stain evaluation
In our dried-on stain mop evaluations, the X8 Pro Omni was not as impressive as we would have liked. It scored 72 when the average is 98, and the Qrevo Edge scored a notable 106. It got a slightly below-average score on the two evaluations we did—one on its low water setting and another on its high water setting.
But because it left behind very little water, it ended up with a higher-than-average mop stain evaluation score after combining the results.
Comprehensive Omni Station
Another big advantage is the Omni Station, which is stacked with features, including:
- Auto-emptying the dust bin into a disposable bag
- Hot water mop pad washing
- Hot air mop pad drying
- Internal water tank filling
- Dirty water tank emptying
- Optional detergent dispensing
- Bin self-cleaning
- Low water level alert
It also has relatively large clean and dirty water tanks and a removable tray. So it has every major bin feature, with the possible exception of a dirty water sensor.
Improved navigation with embedded LiDAR
The X8 Pro has a new embedded LiDAR system—something we’re starting to see more of on top-tier robot vacuums.
This means the spinning LiDAR sensor for mapping and navigation is not mounted on the top, like most robot vacuums with LiDAR, but embedded lower, near the front of the robot.
They’re doing this because it makes the robots slimmer and able to get under more furniture.
Up to this point, we’ve been slightly critical of these embedded LiDAR systems for being just a little less efficient than the top-mounted LiDAR versions. But in our navigation evaluations, the X8 did amazing, getting the 2nd highest score we’ve seen for navigation efficiency.
So, it was fast but also did really well with coverage in general. In our evaluation, it navigated 1.09 square meters per minute, which is particularly impressive when compared to the average robot vacuum score.
Decent battery life and efficient app
The Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni’s battery life was pretty good. With 200 minutes on low power, it had a higher-than-average battery efficiency score in our evaluations and a higher-than-average official battery life number. But those numbers were less than some of its competitors, like the Roborock Edge. This is probably because the X8’s internal LiDAR leaves less room for a larger battery.
Another great thing is the app. Ecovacs has one of the best apps in the business, and they have added a lot of new features recently.
In addition to a built-in voice assistant, it has:
- Multi-level maps
- Virtual barriers
- Advanced scheduling features
- Pet-related features like video calls and much more.
The app also has good ratings on the app stores.
Cons of the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni
It can’t all be good stuff, so let’s move on to some potential drawbacks.
Obstacle avoidance limitations
The Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni uses a camera-based front-mounted obstacle avoidance system to recognize and avoid household objects that it could get stuck on. In our evaluations, the X8 scored 15, which is slightly below average at avoiding obstacles and even a bit below the Roborock Edge.
It could sense most objects in the evaluation, and it was certainly better than the vast majority of robot vacuums without obstacle avoidance sensors, but it wasn’t perfect. This was especially evident with smaller objects.
Overly aggressive side brush
We’ve already mentioned the aggressive side brush, which scatters debris on hard floors. Again, not a big deal for normal amounts of debris, but this caused it to lose a few points.
Small dust bin
Another possible drawback is that the dust bin was very small. Again, this is probably because of the internal LiDAR system, which reduces the real estate available on the robot. At 220ml, it’s one of the smallest bins we’ve seen yet.
You can set it to return to empty its bin several times during a run, but if you have big dogs or something, you will need to do that pretty often with the X8.
Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni review: Final thoughts and overall value
The X8 Pro Omni has a lot of features and functionality at its price point. In fact, when we added all the scores together, the X8 ranks #3 overall on the Vacuum Wars Top 20 Robot Vacuums list (as of this article).
If you’re looking for a top-tier robot vacuum and mop combo that delivers serious cleaning power, advanced navigation, and a highly efficient docking station—all at around 20% less than many direct competitors—the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni is definitely worth considering.
