Dyson recently introduced the V9 as a new entry in its cordless lineup, slotting it between the V8 and the V11 in terms of both price and features. It adopts the in-line body style Dyson popularized with the V10 and V11, comes in lighter than the V8, and is currently selling for significantly less than its original list price. At around $390, we think it’s a surprisingly compelling value for a Dyson cordless vacuum.
We purchased one ourselves and put it through several weeks of testing in our studio. In this review, we’ll cover the strengths and weaknesses of the Dyson V9 Motorbar and see how it stacks up against other cordless vacuums we’ve tested.
Features and Design
The V9 Motorbar is equipped with Dyson’s Motorbar cleaner head, which is designed as a multi-surface cleaner head for both carpets and hard floors and includes Dyson’s active hair removal system. Unlike some higher-end Dyson packages, the V9 Motorbar does not include a dedicated soft roller head.
The V9 uses Dyson’s modern trombone-style in-line design, where the wand, dustbin, and motor are arranged in a straight line.
The vacuum has three power settings—Eco, Medium, and Boost—and it does not include Dyson’s automatic suction adjustment system found on higher-end models.
At its current selling price, it sits between the Dyson V8 and Dyson V11.
Bottom Line: The V9 occupies a unique position in Dyson’s lineup, offering many modern Dyson features while remaining considerably less expensive than flagship models like the V11 and V15.
Suction and Carpet Performance
One of the standout strengths of the Dyson V9 is its power.
In our sealed suction test, it produced 92 inches of water lift, which is significantly above the cordless vacuum average of 73.29 inches and substantially higher than the Dyson V8’s 77-inch result.
That extra pulling power translated into strong real-world cleaning performance, such as in our carpet deep-cleaning test, where we embed sand into medium-pile carpet and measure how much is removed after a set number of passes on maximum power, the V9 achieved a score of 96%. That’s above the cordless vacuum average of 93% and slightly better than the Dyson V8’s 94%.
14-Inch Hair Tangle Test
The V9 also excelled in our 14-inch hair-tangle test. Dyson’s active hair-removal system uses built-in combs to continuously strip long hair from the brush roll during operation. The V9 earned a perfect score of 0, outperforming both the category average and the Dyson V8.
Bottom Line: The Dyson V9 delivers above-average suction, excellent carpet cleaning, and class-leading hair-tangle performance, making it particularly well-suited to homes with pets and carpeted floors.

Lightweight Design and Ergonomics
One of the defining characteristics of the Dyson V9 is how light it feels during use. We measured its handle weight at just 1,226 grams. That’s significantly below the cordless vacuum average of 1,512 grams and dramatically lighter than many recent Dyson models.
For comparison, the Dyson V8 measured 1,562 grams in our testing, while the Dyson Gen5 Detect came in at 2,258 grams, or nearly five pounds.
Because all of a cordless vacuum’s weight is felt through the handle, this difference is immediately noticeable during extended cleaning sessions and especially during handheld use. The lightweight design also makes above-floor cleaning considerably more practical than it is with heavier Dyson models.
The included Hair Screw tool further enhances its handheld performance. This motorized upholstery attachment uses a conical anti-tangle brush roll that performs exceptionally well on furniture, upholstery, stairs, and pet beds.
Bottom Line: The V9 is one of the lightest modern Dyson cordless vacuums we’ve tested, making it especially comfortable for extended cleaning sessions and handheld use.

Filtration and LCD Display
Filtration is another area where Dyson continues to perform well. Like most Dyson cordless vacuums, the V9 uses Dyson’s whole-machine filtration system, which is a fully sealed HEPA design intended to keep microscopic dust particles from escaping back into the air. In our fog test, the V9 showed no visible leakage.
The V9 also includes a full LCD display, which is one of our favorite features on modern cordless vacuums. The screen displays remaining battery life, selected power mode, and maintenance alerts such as filter cleaning reminders. This is a substantial upgrade over the Dyson V8, which lacks a display entirely.
Being able to see precise remaining runtime in real time is genuinely useful and helps eliminate much of the guesswork associated with cordless cleaning.
Battery Life and Efficiency
Dyson rates the V9 for up to 40 minutes of runtime in Eco mode. That’s just slightly below the cordless vacuum average of 45.1 minutes, and identical to the Dyson V8.
In our testing, the V9 ran for approximately 7.18 minutes on Boost mode (the highest mode) with the floorhead attached, which is noticeably below the category average and below the Dyson V8’s 9-minute result.
However, battery efficiency tells a more nuanced story. Our battery efficiency metric combines battery runtime with airflow performance to evaluate how effectively a vacuum converts battery power into usable cleaning performance. The V9 scored 16.39 points, which is above the category average of 15.85.

Bottom Line: While runtime is not a standout feature, the V9’s battery system remains efficient relative to its cleaning performance and lightweight design.
Concerns or Trade-offs
Hard Floor Pickup Performance
The V9’s biggest weakness in our testing was hard floor pickup. Its Motorbar floorhead uses relatively small front gates, which help create a strong seal on carpets but limit its ability to handle larger debris on hard floors.
In our debris testing, it began snowplowing Froot Loops-sized debris and larger particles. As a result, it earned a hard floor pickup score of 2.0, which falls below the category average of 3.5. To be fair, it still outperformed the Dyson V8’s score of 1.5 and handled most common debris types without issue.
This is primarily a concern for homes that regularly deal with larger debris on hard surfaces. We also would have liked to see Dyson include a soft roller cleaner head, which likely would have improved these results.

Dust Bin Capacity and Convenience
Another drawback is the dustbin size. At 350 ml, the V9’s dustbin is considerably smaller than both the Dyson V8 and the category average. You’ll likely find yourself emptying the bin more frequently than you would with most competing cordless vacuums, especially in larger homes or homes with pets.
The good news is that Dyson’s point-and-shoot emptying system remains one of the easiest and most hygienic dustbin designs available.
Bottom Line: The V9’s small dustbin and below-average hard floor pickup represent its most significant compromises and are the main tradeoffs buyers should understand before purchasing.
Missing Features
There are a few additional omissions worth noting:
- The vacuum lacks LED headlights and automatic suction adjustment, two features commonly found on Dyson’s more premium offerings.
- The V9 also uses Dyson’s traditional trigger-style power switch, requiring you to hold the trigger continuously while vacuuming. It does not use the push-button operation found on newer models like the V12 Detect Slim and Gen5 Detect.
Neither omission is surprising given the V9’s price point, but they are worth mentioning if you’re comparing it to Dyson’s flagship models.
Final Verdict
After adding up all of the scores, the Dyson V9 Motorbar emerges as a genuinely good value at its current selling price. Its strongest attributes are its powerful suction, excellent carpet-cleaning performance, perfect hair-tangle results, lightweight design, sealed HEPA filtration, and useful LCD display. These are all features that contribute meaningfully to the day-to-day ownership experience.
