Bissell Names Adam Madigan as New Chief Executive Officer

BISSELL has announced a change at the top of the 150-year-old home and floor-care company, naming longtime executive Adam Madigan as Chief Executive Officer effective October 1, 2026.

Madigan most recently served as BISSELL’s President and Chief Operating Officer and has been with the company for 14 years. He succeeds Mark Bissell, who stepped down as CEO in September 2025 and will continue with the company as Executive Chairman.

A Longtime BISSELL Executive Takes the Lead

Madigan joined BISSELL in 2012 as Global Director of Hard Surface and went on to hold several leadership positions, including Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing before becoming President and COO in 2025. Before joining BISSELL, Madigan worked in marketing and supply-chain roles at Procter & Gamble. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

The appointment represents an internal leadership transition rather than a major change in ownership or family involvement. BISSELL remains a fifth-generation family-owned company, and the Bissell family will continue to play an active role in its operations.

Mark Bissell will remain Executive Chairman, while Max Bissell will continue on the company’s leadership team as President, Global Product, reporting to Madigan.

New Leadership During a Period of Expansion

Madigan takes over at an interesting point in BISSELL’s history. The company is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2026, having grown from Melville Bissell’s original carpet sweeper business into a global floor-care brand with products spanning vacuums, carpet cleaners, portable spot cleaners, and wet-dry floor cleaners.

BISSELL has also been expanding beyond its traditional floor-care categories. Earlier this year, the company introduced a new BISSELL Pet Care division with products including the CleanWell Automatic Litter Box and HydrateWell Automatic Water Fountain.

At the same time, its core cleaning lineup continues to evolve. Recent launches include the CrossWave Reach Plus wet-dry cleaner, and BISSELL has continued developing its carpet-cleaning and portable deep-cleaning ranges.

What the Leadership Change Could Mean for BISSELL

BISSELL says Madigan will lead the company as it pursues further growth and product innovation while continuing to build on its existing brands and recent acquisitions.

Madigan has already been involved in shaping the company’s strategy as President and COO, including work surrounding acquisitions made in recent years. BISSELL acquired professional and household cleaning company Unger in 2024 and previously joined with Rug Doctor in 2022.

The company has not announced any immediate changes to its product strategy as part of the CEO transition. For the floor-care industry, however, Madigan’s appointment puts a longtime BISSELL insider in charge as the company moves into its next phase of product development and expands into categories beyond vacuums and floor cleaners.

Madigan officially assumes the CEO role on October 1, 2026.
